Aaron Curry, a LASSO research scientist at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, measures out strips of seed film - a new seed handling material containing red romaine lettuce seeds - inside the Space Station Processing Facility on Jan. 16, 2020, in preparation for the VEG-03 J experiment. The seed film experiment involves crew aboard the International Space Station planting the seeds into plant pillows - a common method used to grow plants in space - themselves for the first time ever. This water-soluble, dissolving film addresses the challenge of handling seeds in a microgravity environment and also can be used to deliver fertilizers and other beneficial substances that help plants grow. The experiment will be launched to the orbiting laboratory aboard a Northrop Grumman Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft on the companys 13th resupply services mission. Liftoff is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2020, at 5:39 p.m. EST from the agencys Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - From left, T-cell science team members Emily Martinez, Miya Yoshida and Tara Candelario, of the Hughes-Fulford Laboratory, San Francisco, Calif., discuss preflight and post-flight experiment operations with researcher and principal investigator Dr. Millie Hughes-Fulford in the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The immunology experiment will launch on SpaceX-3 and focus on the effects of microgravity on early T-cell signaling pathways. Current work aims to identify and compare the gene expression of microRNAs miRNAs during T-cell activation under normal gravity and in microgravity, and compare those patterns to changes seen in aging populations. The experiment will be the first flown on SpaceX funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hughes-Fulford flew aboard space shuttle mission STS-40 in June 1991, the first Spacelab mission dedicated to biomedical studies.

Jess Bunchek, an associate scientist at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, harvests plant cultivars inside the Veggie growth chamber in the Space Station Processing Facility on Sept. 30, 2019, for a science verification test (SVT). This SVT will study the potential of three plants - amara mustard, ‘outredgeous red romaine lettuce and shungiku, an Asian green comparable to an edible chrysanthemum - to grow in space. All three lettuce plants were grown from seed film, making this the first SVT with this new plant growth material. Earlier this year, the amara mustard and shungiku plants were grown for the first time using seed bags - referred to as pillows - during the Sustained Veggie project, a study funded by the Human Research Program.

The experiment is one of many that will be delivered to the International Space Station on the SpaceX-4 commercial cargo resupply mission.Kennedy's ISS Ground Processing and Research Project Office is providing the necessary laboratories, equipment, supplies and consumables for 61 principal investigators, including 17 from other countries, as they prepare their science experiments for flight. The SpaceX-4 flight is targeted to launch in September 2014.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the Space Life Sciences (SLS) Lab, Jan Bauer, with Dynamac Corp., places samples of onion tissue in the elemental analyzer, which analyzes for carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. The 100,000 square-foot SLS houses labs for NASAs ongoing research efforts, microbiology/microbial ecology studies and analytical chemistry labs. Also calling the new lab home are facilities for space flight-experiment and flight-hardware development, new plant growth chambers, and an Orbiter Environment Simulator that will be used to conduct ground control experiments in simulated flight conditions for space flight experiments. The SLS Lab, formerly known as the Space Experiment Research and Processing Laboratory or SERPL, provides space for NASAs Life Sciences Services contractor Dynamac Corporation, Bionetics Corporation, and researchers from the University of Florida. NASAs Office of Biological and Physical Research will use the facility for processing life sciences

Microgravity Effect on Entomopathogenic Nematodes Ability to Find and Kill Insects (Module-85 Pheronym) tests the effects of microgravity on the movement and infection behavior of beneficial nematodes, which are used to control agricultural insect pests. The research looks at whether these nematodes can navigate through soil, infect insects and reproduce in space. The experiments returned to Earth on SpaceXs 21st commercial resupply services mission (CRS-21). Making its successful parachute-assisted splashdown west of Tampa off the Florida coast, at 8:26 p.m. EST on Jan. 13, the SpaceX cargo Dragon returned more than 4,400 pounds of scientific experiments and other cargo from the International Space Station. After splashdown, SpaceX loaded Dragon aboard their Go Navigator recovery ship and packed an Airbus H225 helicopter with the time-sensitive research cargo for delivery to Kennedy. The upgraded cargo Dragon capsule also boasts double the powered locker capacity to preserve science samples, allowing for a significant increase in the research that can be carried back to Earth.

The Clavicle Matching Program (CMP) is a computer program that compares the shape of collarbones to better help the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency find a possible match to someone still missing. When historical data, DNA, and other contextual information aren't available to narrow down the list, the CMP can be used. First, the clavicles in each of the radiographs were digitally traced to create an outline. Then the clavicles in the lab are 3-D scanned using a surface scanner (Artec Space Spider). The CMP compares the scans from multiple angles to the traced outlines and identifies any similarities. The program can create a shortlist of names for further analysis that may lead to identification. The pictured elements are part of the Agency's reference collection and do not depict casework.
