KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - "Astronauts" were safely and successfully recovered from a "downed" Space Shuttle in a Mode VII contingency simulation led by Don Hammel, NASA Landing and Recovery Director. KSC Fire/Rescue and Emergency Medical workers, along with Johnson Space Center and Patrick Air Force Base personnel, participated in the drill. Mode simulations are held periodically at KSC to ensure contingency response forces are well prepared to respond to a wide variety of potential emergency situations.

Robinson (right) that they will use during the mission. The CEIT gives astronauts an opportunity for a hands-on look at the payloads and equipment with which they will be working on orbit. The launch of the STS-95 mission is scheduled for Oct. 29, 1998. The mission includes research payloads such as the Spartan solar-observing deployable spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform, the International Extreme Ultraviolet Hitchhiker, as well as the SPACEHAB single module with experiments on space flight and the aging process

Technicians in Self-Contained Atmospheric Protective Ensemble (SCAPE) suits exit a truck near the Multi-Payload Processing Facility (MPPF) at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, for a test simulation of loading propellants into a replicated test tank for Orion on Aug. 16, 2019. Exploration Ground Systems is preparing for Artemis 1 with a series of hazardous hyper test events at the MPPF. The technicians will complete a tanking to test the system before Orion arrives for processing. During preparations for launch, these teams will be responsible for loading the Orion vehicle with propellants prior to transportation to the Vehicle Assembly Building, where it will be secured atop the Space Launch System rocket. SCAPE suits are used in operations involving toxic propellants and are supplied with air either through a hardline or through a self-contained environmental control unit.

jsc2020e041336 (Sep 21, 2020) - There are obvious highlights about my job and then there are some highlights that I didnt really see coming. Its such an honor to be just one person behind the scenes supporting the crewmembers while theyre up in space and focusing on their missions. Its such an honor to be a part of them accomplishing their mission. The first time I got a call from space was a major highlight. Every call Ive gotten from space since then has never gotten less exciting. The fact that I am continuously communicating with people who are living and working on the International Space Station its just very surreal, its very mind-blowing still to this day even though Ive been in this role for several years now."But one of the highlights that I didnt necessarily see coming is that a lot of the crewmembers have become mentors to me now. I look up to them for so many different reasons. And we have such a diverse corps that theres really unlimited wisdom that I can take from liste

Family members of Dr. Michael Freilich, for whom the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite is named, gather at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Nov. 20, 2020, the day before the spacecrafts planned launch atop a Falcon 9 rocket. Freilich served as director of NASAs Earth Science Division in the Science Mission Directorate at the agencys Headquarters from 2006 until his retirement in 2019. A tireless advocate for advancing satellite measurements of the ocean, he was instrumental in advancing ocean altimetry and helped drive the evolution of NASA Earth science from a program that launched an Earth-observing space mission every few years to one that launches several missions each year. Freilich died Aug. 5, 2020, of pancreatic cancer. Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich launched Nov. 21, 2020, at 9:17 a.m. PST (12:17 p.m. EST). NASAs Launch Services Program at Kennedy Space Center was responsible for launch management.
