Materials development in the laboratory

Inside the Space Station Processing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Jan. 15, 2020, Jess Bunchek, a pseudonaut and associate scientist, prepares seeds for a germination test. The test will verify that the seeds can successfully grow here on Earth before they are sent to the International Space Station for testing in a microgravity environment as part of the VEG-03 series of experiments. The seed film experiment involves crew aboard the orbiting laboratory planting the seeds into plant pillows - a common method used to grow plants in space - themselves for the first time ever. The water-soluble, dissolving film addresses the challenge of handling seeds in a microgravity environment and also can be used to deliver fertilizers and other beneficial substances that help plants grow. The experiment will launch aboard a Northrop Grumman Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft on the companys 13th resupply services mission to the space station. Liftoff is scheduled for Feb.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - This photo shows the size of the sensors being placed on the wing leading edge of orbiter Discovery. In her hand, United Space Alliance technician Lisa Campbell holds an accelerometer (left), which will eventually be installed on a mounting nut. The sensors are part of the Wing Leading Edge Impact Detection System, a new safety measure added for all future Space Shuttle missions. The system also includes accelerometers that monitor the orbiter's wings for debris impacts during launch and while in orbit. There are 22 temperature sensors and 66 accelerometers on each wing. Sensor data will flow from the wing to the crew compartment, where it will be transmitted to Earth.

The Gravity Probe B (GP-B) is the relativity experiment developed at Stanford University to test two extraordinary predictions of Albert Einsteins general theory of relativity. The experiment will measure, very precisely, the expected tiny changes in the direction of the spin axes of four gyroscopes contained in an Earth-orbiting satellite at a 400-mile altitude. So free are the gyroscopes from disturbance that they will provide an almost perfect space-time reference system. They will measure how space and time are very slightly warped by the presence of the Earth, and, more profoundly, how the Earths rotation very slightly drags space-time around with it. These effects, though small for the Earth, have far-reaching implications for the nature of matter and the structure of the Universe.
