In related versions of the scene (Tate Britain, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London), the figure standing in deep shadow on the roadway is replaced by a woman in white carrying a brightly colored bundle. Date: ca. 1877.Daubigny began exhibiting his work regularly at the Salon in 1838, and by the early 1850s he had achieved considerable success as a landscape painter. Water figures prominently in his imagery--notably, in his riverscapes painted from the vantage point of his studio-boat. This painting's flickering brushwork and lightened palette relate it to the works of the Impressionists, whose influence on Daubigny grew out of his contact with Pissarro and Monet in the 1860s and early 1870s. Watercolor and opaque watercolor with selectively applied glaze over graphite on moderately thick, rough-textured wove paper, 24 7/8 x 35 7/8 in. (63.2 x 91.1cm). The Brooklyn Museums collection of American watercolors was begun in 1906, when this work was acquired in a bequest from the Brooklyn collector Caroline H. Polhemus. Coaching in New England was the work of Albert Fitch Bellows, a practitioner and promoter of watercolor beginning in the late 1860s. To demonstrate that watercolor was as significant and as durable as oil painting, he deliberately produced large and highly finished “exhibition watercolors.” This quaint New England subject was among the most praised works in the 1877 annual exhibition of the American Watercolor Society. Émilie late 1890s Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French Although Lautrec is best known for his depictions of the bawdy entertainments on offer in Pariss Montmartre neighborhood, he was also intrigued by the lively world of the racetrack. In the late 1890s he painted a group of scenes that capture spectators and riders in off-hand moments. Here, he created a witty visual parallel between the exaggerated, bustled silhouette of the woman in the foreground, and the horse and rider behind her. At lower left, Lautrec inscribed the painting “to Émilie”; her identity remains unknown.. Émilie 437839

The Artist's House at Argenteuil 1873 France. Claude Monet and his family lived at Argenteuil, outside Paris, from 1871 to 1878. Here he depicted his five- or six-year-old son, Jean, playing with a hoop and his wife, Camille, standing in the doorway of their vine-covered house. The pleasant weather and neatly kept garden, a forerunner of the artistís celebrated garden at Giverny, give a sense of tranquility and well-being to this painting. The Valley of Arconville c 1887 United States. One of the first American artists to paint in Giverny, France, Theodore Robinson assimilated the teachings of the regionís most famous resident, Claude Monet, in his vibrant compositions. Using layered, broken brushwork, Robinson foregrounded the slope of the hill, leading the eye from the figure at right across the Valley of Arconville beyond. Capturing the effects of light on the landscape like Monet and other progressive French painters, Robinson nonetheless rendered his forms with a measure of solidity that was more typical of American artists who worked in an Impressionist style.. Sketchbook of a Journey to the Chteau d'Eu 1811 Pierre François Léonard Fontaine French Fontaine, the leading architect of the Napoleonic period, filled this sketchbook with watercolors while traveling to the Chteau dEu in Normandy to assess its suitability for conversion into an imperial palace. He recorded many of the scenic vistas he encountered en route, such as this cliff-top view over a coastal town.
