A Dell, Helmingham Park, Suffolk 1830 David Lucas British In 1827, Constable began work on the project that would occupy his attention until his death seven years later: the publication of a series of prints based on his paintings that would stand as a summary of his achievements. The painter collaborated closely with the engraver David Lucas to create prints that would illustrate Constable's didactic intentionto illustrate the "chiaroscuro of nature." Date: 1830-49.In 1829, Lucas became involved in a project with John Constable to execute a select group of Constable's landscape paintings in mezzotint, a tonal engraving medium in which the plate is roughened with a tool called a rocker so that its burr retains the printing ink to varying degrees. Constable saw the early proofs and requested that Lucas bring him more examples: "Bring me another large 'Castle,' or two, or three, for it is mighty fine, though it looks as if all the chimney sweepers in Christendom had been at work on it and thrown their soot bags up in the air." Richards first traveled to Europe in 1855, remaining abroad for a year and spending most of the time in Italy. Like so many artists before him, Richards was overjoyed to be in Florence: I have not as yet realized that I am in Italy that all the dreams of a boyhood are fulfilled.” Richards carried this small sketchbook on a walking tour in the Apennine mountains in October 1855. The carefully drawn vista shown here of the broad valley through which the Arno river winds reminded Richards, always quick to compare American and European landscape scenery, of the view of the Hudson from the Catskill Mountain House. Sunset Ralph Albert Blakelock (American, 1847-1919). Sunset, July 1, 1876. Transparent and opaque watercolors and graphite on cream wove paper, 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. (16.5 x 10.8 cm). Although Blakelock is better known for his eccentric, moonlit landscapes, he did practice conventional sketching in the manner of Hudson River School painters. In this sheet torn from a sketchbook, the artist captured the general composition in pencil, probably en plein air, and then painted over the initial sketch. His pencil outlines and descriptive notationssuch as “warm gray” and “floating cirrus”are still visible through the watercolor in the clouds. American Art July 1, 1876

(23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum.
