Breaking Waves, September Tide Made 1901 France. Louis-Auguste LepÈre began his career as a commercial wood engraver, but in 1885 he decided to begin making his own original woodcuts. Moved by Japanese prints exhibited at the 1888 Exposition Internationale de Blanc et Noir and the 1889 Exposition Universelle, LepÈre experimented with the color woodcut process. Breaking Waves pays homage to the ocean imagery popular in the islands of Japan and integrates a diagonally recessed shoreline with a horizon line just above the center elements that find a counterpart in Utagawa Hiroshigeís Hamamatsu.. A dozen years later, he was drawn back to what he described as "one of the finest views in the world": the prospect toward Rome up the valley of the Aniene River, past the Cascatelle (waterfalls) pouring from the arches of the so-called villa of Maecenas. Following his customary practice, Gifford made several quick pencil sketches of the site from nature. He later worked from them to produce this painting for the leading New York collector Robert Gordon. Characteristically, his primary interest was in rendering the effects of light, using it to unify the scene. Thin, transparent layers of paint, with subtle transitions in tone, suggest the atmosphere. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Ville-d'Avray. Artist: Camille Corot (French, Paris 1796-1875 Paris). Dimensions: 21 5/8 x 31 1/2 in. (54.9 x 80 cm). Date: 1870.Corot often painted views of the large pond on the property he had inherited from his parents at Ville-d'Avray. In repeating the scene, he took certain liberties, especially with the tree just left of center. The silhouette of branches and foliage against the pewter sky led Corot's biographer Alfred Robaut to liken this work to a spider's web. Corot initially included a child with outstretched arms beside the crouching peasant woman, but he seems to have found this detail too anecdotal. Critics admired the calm poetry of this composition when it was first exhibited at the 1870 Salon. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Pictured here are Omoo and his crew. Omoo or A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas, is a novel by the American novelist Herman Melville. Published in 1847, it was a sequel to Melvilles novel Typee. Based on his own experiences in the South Pacific, this episodic novel, in a more comical vein than that of Typee, tells of the narrators participation in a mutiny on a whale ship and his subsequent wanderings in Tahiti with the ships former doctor, Long Ghost. Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Moby-Dick; Typee (a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia), Omoo, and Billy Budd. The illustrator is Mead Schaeffer.
