Royal Air Force Radar, 1939-1945 Chain Home: CH receiver room at an East Coast station, showing one of the two RF7 Receivers (left) and the Mark 3 Console (right) in use. This is typical of late-war CH stations, which had been semi-automated through the use of an analog computer referred to as the 'fruit machine'. On the left, the radar operator's hand is resting on the goniometer control, which allowed her to change the sensitive direction of the receiver in order to determine the bearing of the target. An additional control set an electronic pointer on the display, the 'strobe', to lie over a selected target. When both the direction and range were selected, a button was pushed to send this information electrically to the fruit machine. The fruit machine then applied a number of calculations to these measures to correct for known oddities of the receiver system and geography of the local site, then translated these corrected range and direction measures into map grid references using

Women's Royal Naval Service- With the Fleet Air Arm, Scotland, 1943 Third Officer Ingledew, WRNS, encourages gunners of the Station Defence to draw various aircraft types from memory as part of her daily hour-long lecture on aircraft recognition. The epidiascope used to project pictures of aircraft onto the screen as part of this class can be seen in the background. Drawings are judged on the recognition of outstanding features of all aircraft types, not on artistic merit! According to the original caption, a similar course is being considered for Fleet Air Arm personnel on the recognition of ships.

Officers In The Making -- At the W.A.C.(I) O.C.T.U. at Dagshai, in the Himalayan foothills, carefully selected girls from all parts of India who have been through the ranks are trained to become officers. Although most lectures are entirely different, military procedure is followed exactly as in Army O.C.T.U.s so that the girls acquire the art of command. Lectures include administration staff duties, quarter- mastering, ordnance work, management of hostels, welfare, weapons and the functions of the services so that they have an adequate military background for their work.At one of their recreation rooms the cadets have their own shop.
