Life in Camp, Part 1: Hard Tack After Winslow Homer American Publisher Louis Prang & Co. American 1864 In 1864 Homer designed two series of lithographed collectors cards titled Life in Camp for the Boston publisher Louis Prang & Co. Unlike his serious war-time images for Harpers Weekly, the artist felt free to inject humor into these miniature comments on army life which include images of soldiers resting, eating and reacting to army life. Here, a Union soldier reacts to hard tack, a hated food staple that provided little more than calories. By 1864 the war was entering its final months and formerly sacrosanct subjects could be approached more lightly.

In this 1903 political sketch by Albert Hahn, the Sultan of Aceh submits to a stern-looking Queen Wilhemina ( she was only 23 years old at the time) watched by a group of smiling capitalist fat cats, the ruins of Aceh in the background. The Aceh War, also known as the Dutch War or the Infidel War (1873-1914), was an armed military conflict between the Sultanate of Aceh and the Netherlands which was triggered by discussions between representatives of Aceh and the United Kingdom in Singapore during early 1873. The war was part of a series of conflicts in the late 19th century that consolidated Dutch rule over modern-day Indonesia.

The Battle of Manila Bay, in the Philippines, took place on May 1, 1898, during the Spanish American War. The American Asiatic squadron was under the command of Commodore George Dewey, and it destroyed the Spanish Pacific Squadron under Admiral Patricio Montojo y Pasaron. The Siege of Tsingtao was the attack on the German-controlled port of Tsingtao (now Qingdao) in China during World War I by Imperial Japan and the United Kingdom. It took place between 31 October and 7 November 1914 and was fought by Imperial Japan and the United Kingdom against Germany. It was the first encounter between Japanese and German forces, and also the first Anglo-Japanese operation during the war.
