ISS037-E-025866 (4 Nov. 2013) --- In the International Space Station s Kibo laboratory, NASA astronaut Michael Hopkins, Expedition 37 flight engineer, conducts a session with a pair of bowling-ball-sized free-flying satellites known as Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites, or SPHERES. Surrounding the two SPHERES mini-satellites is ring-shaped hardware known as the Resonant Inductive Near-field Generation System, or RINGS. SPHERES-RINGS seeks to demonstrate wireless power transfer between satellites at a distance for enhanced operations.

ISS039-E-014705 (22 April 2014) --- Expedition 39 Commander Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) inputs data in a computer in JAXA's Kibo laboratory on the International Space Station. On this day, two flight engineers -- NASA astronauts Steve Swanson and Rick Mastracchio -- went outside the orbital outpost to replace a failed backup computer relay box in the S0 truss.

iss060e021455 (Aug. 5, 2019) --- Expedition 60 Flight Engineer Nick Hague of NASA is pictured in the vestibule between the Unity module and the Northrop Grumman Cygnus space freighter. Hague had installed a SlingShot Deployer to the outside of Cygnus' hatch that would eject several small satellites once the commercial cargo craft reached a safe distance from the station after its departure.

iss056e009809 (June 11, 2018) --- Expedition 56 Flight Engineer Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA is pictured in the Destiny laboratory module with gear from the Marrow investigation. She was collecting breath samples to analyze and measure red blood cell function to help doctors understand how blood cell production is altered in microgravity. Results may improve the health of astronauts on long-term missions and help patients on Earth with mobility and aging issues.

MELFI is a low temperature freezer facility with nominal operating temperatures of -80, -26 and +4 degrees Celsius that will preserve experiment materials over long periods. The results of the Nutrition experiment will be used to better understand the time course effects of space flight on human physiology.

ISS045E050652 (10/07/2015) --- US astronauts Scott Kelly (bottom)and Kjell Lindgren (top) are counting down to a pair of spacewalks, now targeted for Oct. 28 and Nov. 6. The duo serviced their spacesuits replacing lithium batteries, checking their gloves and verifying power to video cameras. On the first spacewalk, the spacewalkers will lubricate the tip of the robotic arm Canadarm2, route power cables and place a thermal shroud over the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. During the second spacewalk, Kelly and Lindgren will refill coolant reservoirs and configure the port truss cooling system back to its original configuration after repair work completed back in 2012.

ISS040-E-013952 (18 June 2014) --- In the International Space Station's Kibo laboratory, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, Expedition 40 flight engineer, enters data in a computer during test runs of the SPHERES-Slosh experiment, using the soccer-ball-sized, free-flying satellites known as Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites, or SPHERES (out of frame). The SPHERES-Slosh investigation uses small robotic satellites on the space station to examine how liquids move around inside containers in microgravity.

ISS035-E-010762 (29 March 2013) --- Expedition 35 Flight Engineer Roman Romanenko, whose stretched-out arm can be seen at upper right, was expecting to see NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy float into this scene in the Poisk or Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), but he might have been somewhat surprised to see the exaggerated mustache which Cassidy was sporting. Cassidy and two crewmates had earlier arrived at the orbital outpost by way of the Soyuz TMA-08M spacecraft. One would imagine that Expedition 35 Commander Chris Hadfield (out of frame), who has a real mustache, likely checked out the one on Cassidy.

The SPHERES Tether Demo studies the dynamics of a tethered capture object and a space tug” chase vehicle, improving computer programs needed for removing space debris as well as capturing scientific samples from other planets.

The Capillary Flow Experiments demonstrate how capillary forces work in space, how differently shaped containers change the wicking behavior of a wetting fluid, and how such can be used to passively separate liquids and gases. Understanding how microgravity amplifies these behaviors could improve the reliability of such key processes as water purification fuel storage and supply, and general liquid transport aboard spacecraft.

The experiment sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) observes how microgravity affects the abilities of astronauts to regulate grip force and upper limb trajectories when manipulating objects during a variety of movements. Morgan is conducting the scientific operations inside ESA's Columbus laboratory module.

Pettit used an 8-mm lens to achieve what he called a "double fisheye" effect because the sphere itself provides a fisheye reflection. A close look of the sphere reveals a mirrored Pettit.

The ESA GRIP study may inform the design of future spacecraft control devices and space system interfaces.

The Japanese experiment, which is conducted in Kibos Kobairo rack, seeks to identify gravity sensors in cells that may change the expression of key proteins and genes and allowing muscles to atrophy in microgravity.

ISS028-E-015885 (10 July 2011) --- In the Quest airlock of the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Rex Walheim, STS-135 mission specialist, checks out the extravehicular mobile unit space suits designated for duty on a spacewalk less than 48 hours away. Expedition 28 crewmembers Michael Fossum and Ron Garan, whose suit bears red stripes and is the one Walheim is checking at the moment, will be inside the suits for the spacewalk, scheduled to begin in the morning of July 12.

iss064e020142 (Jan. 5, 2021) --- Expedition 64 Flight Engineer and NASA astronaut Kate Rubins loads engineered heart tissue samples into a science freezer for preservation and later analysis. The science freezer, located in the Japanese Kibo laboratory module, is known as the Minus Eighty-Degree Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) and maintains experiment samples at ultra-cold temperatures throughout a mission.
