Virgin and Child. Artist: Master of the Saint Ursula Legend (Netherlandish, active late 15th century). Dimensions: Arched top, 22 1/8 x 13 1/2 in. (56.2 x 34.3 cm). Date: 1475-99.Devotional images of the breastfeeding Virgin, the <i>Virgo lactans</i>, became extremely popular in fifteenth-century painting, particularly in Bruges, where the Sint-Donaaskerk housed relics of Mary's hair and milk. While the motif generally derives from a Byzantine icon type (<i>galaktotrophousa</i>), the Virgin and Child in this picture were quoted from Rogier van der Weyden's <i>Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin</i> (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). The seemingly archaic trompe l'oeil golden niche returns the image to its status as an icon.The frame is original; hinge holes (now plugged) indicate that the panel was formerly the central element of a triptych. Date: ca. 1528.Sarto was known as "the painter without defects." His figures are masterfully drawn, beautifully colored, and composed with an air of nobility. Giovanni Borgherini commissioned this grand Holy Family during the short-lived rule of Florence as a Republic before the Medici family was reinstated violently and permanently as its rulers. Sarto expressed the political meaning through the imagery of Christ holding the orb, suggesting his exclusive kingship--a known symbol of the Republic. Virgin and Child with Saint Anne. Artist: Albrecht Dürer (German, Nuremberg 1471-1528 Nuremberg). Dimensions: 23 5/8 x 19 5/8 in. (60 x 49.8 cm). Date: probably 1519.This haunting devotional painting depicts Saint Anne, who was particularly venerated in Germany, with the Virgin and Child. The motif of the sleeping infant, foreshadowing Christ's death, was probably inspired by Giovanni Bellini, whose work Dürer admired during his sojourn in Venice. Anne's hand on her daughter's shoulder takes on a consolatory meaning, and her distant gaze suggests a premonition of Christ's Passion. The model for Anne was Dürer's wife, Agnes, studied in a preparatory drawing signed and dated 1519 (Albertina, Vienna). Although this panel's date and monogram were added later, the picture was likely painted in that year. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Anthuenis, or Antoon Claeissens, Claessens, or Claeissins (c.1536 - 1613) was the son of Pieter Claes the elder and painted historical and allegorical subjects, and portraits. He was a native of Bruges and became a pupil of Pieter Pourbus. He entered the Bruges Guild of Saint Luke in 1575, and became its dean in 1586, 1590, and 1601. His works, several of which are in the Hôtel-de-Ville and churches of Bruges, are distinguished by their fine colouring and finish. In the Hotel-de-Ville is a 'Grand Banquet' with many portraits of magistrates of the time, dated 1574. He died in 1613. His son, Pieter Anthonie, was dean of the Guild of St. Luke at Bruges in 1607, and died in 1608.

(71.1 × 54.6 × 15.2 cm, 63.5 kg). Date: ca. 1490.This Madonna and Child is the last in a distinguished series of fifteenth-century reliefs in the Museum by some of the foremost Florentine sculptors. In his choice of subject and its treatment, Benedetto da Maiano followed his master Antonio Rossellino (see acc. no. 14.40.675) and his compatriot and near-contemporary Desiderio da Settignano, but Benedetto's contribution to this staple of Italian art, a late work by the artist, has a particular solidity and monumentality. The Virgin is heavily clothed in a long-sleeved tunic with a mantle over her shoulders; engagingly, a veil circles her head and falls to her breast, where the Christ Child gathers it with one hand and tugs it with the other.
