Madonna and Child with Nine Angels. Artist: Segna di Buonaventura (Italian, active Siena by 1298-died 1326/31). Dimensions: Left wing, overall, with engaged frame, 15 1/8 x 10 5/8 in. (38.4 x 27 cm); right wing, overall, with engaged frame, 15 x 10 5/8 in. (38.1 x 27 cm). Date: ca. 1315.This panel and another in the Lehman Collection portraying the Crucifixion (1975.1.2) formed a diptych (two panels hinged together so they could open and close) and would have been used for private devotion. The radiant beauty of the Virgin's court, enhanced by the ornamental detail, contrasts with the tragic drama of the Crucifixion, thus offering the worshipper two very different images on which to meditate. These panels reveal Segna di Buonaventura's appropriation of the language and motifs of his master, Duccio. The greatest Sienese painter of the fourteenth century, Duccio's emotionally expressive figures, complex spatial structures, and subtle use of color had a formative influence on generations

Saint Lawrence Enthroned with Saints and Donors 1440s Fra Filippo Lippi Italian Saint Lawrence is shown enthroned, with his feet resting on the grill on which he was martyred. He is flanked by Saints Cosmas and Damian, whose cult was closely associated with the ruling Medici family. Alessandro Alessandri (1391-1460), a Florentine merchant and member of its civic government, is shown kneeling with his two sons. He was at the height of his political career when he commissioned this altarpiece for the family's church at Vincigliata in the hills above Florence. Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels Workshop of Bernardino Luini (Italian, Milanese School, circa 1480-1532). Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels, mid-16th century. Oil on poplar panel, 96 3/4 x 54 1/16 in. (245.7 x 137.3 cm). The Christ Child is depicted holding a glass sphere, which identified him to Renaissance audiences as lux mundi, the light of the world. This painting is a replica, created in the workshop of Bernardino Luini, of the central section of Luinis 1523 altarpiece in the Basilica of San Magno in Legnano (near Milan). It was common in Renaissance Italy for artists and their studios to produce copies of their celebrated works for private clients and churches. Small incision marks (only visible when seen illuminated from one side, at an oblique angle) suggest that this composition was based on the same preparatory drawing as the original altarpiece. Madonna and Child with Donors. Artist: Giovanni da Milano (Italian, born Lombardy, active Florence 1346-69). Dimensions: 27 1/8 x 56 3/4 in. (68.9 x 144.1 cm). Date: ca. 1365.Although from Milan, Giovanni was primarily active in Florence, where the refined naturalism of his figures was influential. This lunette-shaped picture dates from the 1360s and was probably set into an arch above a tomb. It shows the deceased husband and wife welcomed into heaven by the Christ Child. Two realms overlap: the sacred and the temporal, making the illusionistic ledge, the disparity in figure scale, and the clasped hands resonate with meaning. The surface is badly abraded, but the head and right hand of the Madonna give a good idea of the subtlety of Giovanni's painting. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

This image shows the panel-painting Madonna in the Rose Garden (also known as Madonna of the Rose Bower and Virgin of the Rose Bower) by the German artist Stephan Lochner, which is housed in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, Germany. It is usually dated c 1440-42, although some art historians believe it contemporaneous with his laterDombild Altarpiece. It is usually seen as one of his finest and most closely detailed works.

The Assumption of the Virgin Bergognone (Ambrogio di Stefano da Fossano) Italian A successful and popular painter of altarpieces, Bergognone worked for major churches throughout Lombardy, including the Incoronata in Lodi and the Certosa of Pavia. This picture, which dates from the early sixteenth century, formed the center panel of a large polyptych. St Anne with the Virgin and Child, 1500-1550. German School. The theme of three generations of the Holy Family, grandmother, mother and child, was popular in Northern Europe and especially Germany in the 15th and 16th century. Christ is depicted as a plump young child with his hand raised in blessing. The pomegranate held by the child and the Virgin is a Christian symbol of the Resurrection, due to its classical association with Proserpine, the daughter of the corn goddess Ceres, who returned each spring to regenerate the earth. It also has associations with the Virgin's chastity.
