Virgin and Child with Angels ca. 1518 Bernard van Orley Netherlandish Van Orley probably painted this refined and intimate picture of the Virgin and Child about the time of his appointment in 1518 as official painter to Margaret of Austria, regent of the Netherlands. A courtly Madonna of Humility, the Virgin wears a luxurious fur-trimmed dress and is seated on the ground in the enclosed but spacious garden of her palace. She is accompanied by two singing angels, who are echoed by grisaille angels in heaven. The distant background testifies to the painters awareness of the developing landscape genre, and the elaborately ornamented fountain incorporates Italian Renaissance decorative motifs.. Virgin and Child with Angels. Bernard van Orley (Netherlandish, Brussels ca. 1492-1541/42 Brussels). ca. 1518. Oil on wood. Paintings

Saints John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene ca. 1335-45 Italian, Neapolitan Follower of Giotto This painting, together with a panel portraying the Virgin and the Dead Christ (National Gallery, London), originally formed a diptych (two panels hinged together that could be opened and closed). The painting illustrates the formative influence that the Florentine master Giotto, a pivotal figure in Western art, had in Naples during his activity there from 1328 to 1332. The diptych was likely painted by a member of Giottos workshop in Naples, who was active on the frescoes in the Church of Santa Chiara. Giotto's Neapolitan workshop may have continued to operate after he returned to Florence in 1333. The monumentality of the figures, which protrude outside the painted framework, together with their expressive gestures of grief, intensify the dramatic quality of this work, which was probably made for private devotion. The diptych may have been commissioned by Queen Sancia of Naples (1286-134

Virgin and Child, Master of the tricky children (attributed to), Gianfrancesco Rustici (attributed to), c. 1500 - c. 1525 On an apparently chopped plinth with ditto elevation, Maria is slightly tilted backwards and turned to the right with the upper body. With one hand she holds it over her left leg struggling naked child while holding a book with the judge, from which she reads. Her head is used to the book. The child, with the right leg forward and the left backwards, grabs the right hand to Mary's right breast, who comes through a split in her robe. His smiling face with a somewhat playful naughty expression is focused on this. Maria's wavy hair, on the head by two tires and held together on the back of the head through a canvas, is tied together in the neck and then falls apart loosely over the back. She wears a robe that is deposited on the neck with a wide tire and is held together around the waist by a belt. Her cloak falls over the left shoulder, runs on her right side in a lar
