Madonna and Child with the Annunciation and the Nativity ca. 1310-15 Goodhart Ducciesque Master Italian This delicately painted panel is by a close follower of Duccio and employs some of his favorite devices, such as the Child playing with the veil of the Virgin, who engages the gaze of the viewer-worshipper. Its small size made it perfect for private devotion, as it could be easily moved. The scenes of the Annunciation and Nativity helped focus meditation on the life of the Virgin. Madonna and Child possibly 1230s Berlinghiero Italian Of solemnly hieratic beauty, this is one of only two works that can be confidently assigned to Berlinghiero, the leading painter in the Tuscan city of Lucca. It follows the Byzantine type known as the Hodegetria ("She who shows the way"), familiar from icons that arrived in Italy following the fall of Constantinople in 1204. The Madonna points to Jesus as the way to Salvation; dressed like an ancient philosopher, he holds a scroll. One scholar has noted: "Berlinghieros work operates with nuances.. the language of gestures, with their gentle flow and their subtle meaning on both human and theological levels.". Madonna and Child Enthroned ca. 1335-39 Workshop of Bernardo Daddi Italian The Virgin sits on a grand throne with the Christ Child standing on her lap in this small devotional panel from the fourteenth-century workshop of Bernardo Daddi. While the hand of a specific artist cannot be identified, this image is a variant of a popular type that was produced in the Florentine masters workshop (a close comparison is the Madonna and Child with Four Saints in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples). It is likely that this panel was part of a diptych or triptych that would have also featured images of saints, angels, or other devotional scenes, such as the Crucifixion. Its small size would have allowed the owner to transport it with relative ease. The Madonna and Child Enthroned was a common subject for devotional objects in the fourteenth century. Greek Icon of Mary with Christ from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This church is in Jerusalem and is identified as the place both of the crucifixion and the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth. Originally built by the mother of Emperor Constantine in 330 A.D.; the original Byzantine Church was destroyed by the Persians in A.D. 614.

Virgin Annunciate. Scenes of The Annunciation were regularly depicted on the upper parts of large polyptychs, and that accounts for this small roundel, undoubtedly one of a pair with another, which would have shown the archangel Gabriel announcing the Virgins conception. When such altarpieces went out of fashion, they were often dismembered and the fragments found their way into private collections.
