Virgin and Child. Artist: Joos van Cleve (Netherlandish, Cleve ca. 1485-1540/41 Antwerp) and a collaborator. Dimensions: Overall 28 3/8 x 21 1/4 in. (72.1 x 54 cm); painted surface 27 3/4 x 20 3/4 in. (70.5 x 52.7 cm). Date: ca. 1525.Two iconographic themes are combined in this splendid painting: the joys of motherhood and the sorrowful premonition of Christ's death. The sleeping infant is traditionally understood as a prefiguration of the dead Christ embraced by the Virgin, known as the Pietà. Contemplating her devotional reading, Mary points to her prayer book, in which two pages are legible. Taken from the <i>Magnificat</i> (Luke 1:54-55), celebrating the Annunciation, and the <i>De Profundis</i> (Psalm 130:1-2), used in the Mass for the dead, the verses foreshadow the Virgin's rejoicing in the fulfillment of Christ's destiny and her suffering at her son's death. The Virgin of the Nativity. Artist: Workshop of Filippino Lippi (Italian, Prato ca. 1457-1504 Florence). Dimensions: 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. (32.4 x 24.8 cm). Date: probably ca. 1500.The picture is a fragment of a Nativity, the original composition of which is known from an early-sixteenth-century copy in the Musée du Petit Palais in Avignon. The Virgin was shown kneeling on the pavement adoring the Christ Child, who was embraced by the infant Saint John the Baptist. Saint Joseph was behind the infants, and two shepherds appeared to the right behind a broken stone wall. There are minor differences between the present picture and that at Avignon, but they conform in essential features, and there can be no doubt that the present picture was conceived as a small tondo.The picture probably dates from about 1500. The frame is a twentieth century reproduction. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Madonna and Child ca. 1290-1300 Duccio di Buoninsegna Italian This lyrical work inaugurates the grand tradition in Italian art of envisioning the sacred figures of the Madonna and Child in terms appropriated from real life. The Christ Child gently pushes away the veil of his mother, whose sorrowful expression reflects her foreknowledge of his crucifixion. The beautifully modeled drapery enhances their three-dimensional, physical presence and the parapet connects the fictive, sacred world of the painting with the temporal one of the viewer.
