Madonna and Child ca. 1505-7 Luca Signorelli (Luca d'Egidio di Luca di Ventura) Italian The artist gave this painting to his daughter as a gift in 1507, possibly to celebrate the birth of a child. A student of ancient art and a master of the human figure, Signorelli was one of the protagonists of Renaissance painting. This picture makes use in the background of highly original decorations partly inspired by motifs popularized by the discovery of the Golden House of Nero in the late fifteenth century. In the upper corners are heads of (left) Domitian and (right) Julius Caesar. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #5070. The Holy Family with Saint Mary Magdalen. Artist: Andrea Mantegna (Italian, Isola di Carturo 1430/31-1506 Mantua). Dimensions: 22 1/2 x 18 in. (57.2 x 45.7 cm). Date: ca. 1495-1500.The composition of this late picture by Mantegna was inspired by Roman funerary reliefs, which accounts for the combination of austerity and sweetness. It is painted in distemper rather than oil, allowing the artist to give strong definition to the forms. Originally, the colors would have had a freshness and clarity. However, the picture has suffered from past cleanings and its surface has been varnished, compromising the intended effect. Mantegna painted for the elite Gonzaga court in Mantua, where the antiquarian culture informing this picture would have been appreciated. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Virgin and Child with Four Angels. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: 24 7/8 x 15 3/8 in. (63.2 x 39.1 cm). Date: ca. 1510-15.Gerard David, the leading painter in Bruges in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, followed the legacy of Jan van Eyck. In this painting he has taken the Virgin and Child from his predecessor's well-known Virgin and Child at the Fountain, but modernized the composition by placing the figures in a grand arched porch flanked by columns with Italianate capitals and against the backdrop of contemporary Bruges. A Carthusian monk is seen strolling and reading in the enclosed garden, suggesting that the painting was linked to the former monastery at Genadedael, just outside the city walls of Bruges. Madonna and Child late 1480s Giovanni Bellini Italian Separated from our everyday world by a parapet, the figures nonetheless engage the viewer with their gazes. A cloth of honor has been pulled aside to reveal a distant landscape, where we witness the transition from dormant to verdant naturea metaphor, like the dawn sky, for death and rebirth. The asymmetrical composition looks ahead to the work of Titian. When Albrecht Dürer visited Venice, he declared Bellini the best painter. The fine Venetian frame is of the period.. The Rest on the Flight into Egypt 1537-40 Jan Massys This depiction masterfully demonstrates advances in the development of new genres of painting in the 1530s in Antwerp, namely landscape and still-life, and the introduction of figural motifs derived from the works of Leonardo da Vinci. Increasingly characteristic was a division of labor in workshops where one artistJan Massyspainted the figures, and anotherthe Master of the Liège Disciples at Emmausadded the landscape.. Madonna Adoring the Sleeping Child early 1460s Giovanni Bellini Italian This is an important early work by Giovanni Bellini, the greatest painter of fifteenth-century Venice and one of the key figures of European painting. Datable to the mid-1460s, its hard, linear quality is indebted to the example of Bellinis brother-in-law, Andrea Mantegna, as well as to the sculpture of Donatello, which Bellini studied in Padua. The sleeping child is a reminder of Christ's death and sacrifice. The picture has suffered from a strong, abrasive cleaning.. Madonna Adoring the Sleeping Child. Virgin and Child with Saint Elizabeth and the Infant Saint John the Baptist 1628-1629 France. Like other ambitious painters of his day, Jacques Blanchard began his career with years of travel and study in Italy before establishing himself in Paris. Blanchardís itinerary took him to Rome, Venice, and Turin, before his return to Paris via Lyon. This tender painting of the Christ Child approached by his cousin, Saint John the Baptist, probably belongs to these years of travel. Blanchard drew on works by Titian and Veronese that he had seen in Venice for the dynamic poses and warm light, but he evidently still felt some uncertainty in the placement of the figures in space.. The Holy Family with Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist 1610-1620 Flanders. This painting of the Holy Family is one of several completed in the decade after Peter Paul Rubens returned to his native Antwerp, following an eight-year stay in Italy. Fully immersed in Italian art, the prodigiously productive artist had acquired such facility in handling brush, color, gures, and drapery and in arranging large-scale compositions that he was unrivaled north of the Alps. Here he displayed these skills not only by bringing a sacred subject to life but also by bringing it down to earth. Vital and believable Flemish gures ll the composition, which is dominated by the Virgin clad in a brilliant red dress. The bold, diagonal movement of the playful infants is an effective counterbalance to the full, rounded gure of Mary. Joseph (Maryís husband) and Elizabeth (her cousin, and the mother of John the Baptist) frame the pyramidal group as aged and more passive protectors. The atmosphere of joyful
