Male Nude Torso with Raised Arms ca. 1522-24 Parmigianino (Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola) Italian Popham considered this small, delicately executed study a pre-Roman drawing by the artist, copied probably from an antique statue of the Flaying of Marsyas. However, the pose of the shoulders and armpit here does not seem to correspond to the tight compression of the shoulders and disjointed raising of the arms, with wrists bound above the head, that is typical of Marsyas figures (see Bober and Rubinstein 1986, pls 32-4). The figure's pose in Parmigianino's study, with a gently distended torso and raised arms, seems more appropriate for a portrayual of the crucified Christ. The stumps indicating the arms may suggest that the drawing is based on a wax sketch model. The artist concentrated on the rendering of the torso, blending the strokes seamlessly by means of stumping and inflecting the contours with small points of shadow. To provide a contrast, he left much of the parallel hatching

Date: 16th century. This print comes from the museum's copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title 'Spec

Study of a Nude Man ca. 1810-20 French Painter A study of a nude model is often called an academy (académie in French), because such paintings and drawings have been standard exercises in art schools, or academies, since the sixteenth century. This work depicts a model in a pose found in at least two other paintings. One of these, now in the Musée Bonnat, Bayonne, is widely accepted as a work made by Gericault, possibly between 1810 and 1813, in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin (1774-1833).. Critics were split in their opinions of the painting according to their position relative to realism; some saw the subject as unworthy, while others saw it as representative of modern life. This wood engraving published in "Le Monde Illustré" is representative of how major artworks at the annual Salon circulated visually among a public that may or may not have visited the exhibition in person..
