The Preaching of Saint John the Baptist. The protagonist in this scene, John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, stands partially concealed in the shade of a group of fanciful trees. It is as if Bloemaert wanted to prove that he could paint virtually anything and everything: a mountainous landscape, leafy trees, as well as figures, either nude or clad in exotic colourful gowns and arranged in complicated poses. All of this proves him to be a master of Mannerism.

Polycrates' Crucifixion 1663-1665 Italy. Salvator Rosa developed a kind of dramatic landscape in which nature is presented as wild, dangerous, and filled with striking effects of light, broken trees, jagged cliffs, and dark grottoes. A native of Naples, Rosa settled in Rome in 1649, producing dramatic works that are regarded as counter-parts to the calm, classical landscapes of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. Rosaís dark style is well suited to the subject of this pair of paintings; they recount an episode from the Greco-Persian Wars as told by the ancient Green historian Herodotus. The ruler of the island of Samos, Polycrates, had been blessed with remarkable good fortune. In an effort to ward off a reversal of fortune, he cast a precious ring into the sea, but it was returned to him, swallowed by a fish. Date: 1832.While better known for his paintings based on the writings of Washington Irving, Quidor also painted scenes from the popular novels of James Fenimore Cooper. In this episode from The Pioneers (1823), the woodsman Natty Bumppo, also known as Leatherstocking, rescues two comely young women from a female panther, which, in protecting her cub, destroyed their dog and then turned, threateningly, to them. Quidor enhanced the fantastic and horrific aspects of the story in the highly stylized setting of twisted tree trunks and roots, which take on menacing shapes. The Golden Age Jean-Baptiste Joseph Pater French Pater was the only official student of Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), who pioneered subjects of overgrown gardens populated by well-dressed men and women engaged in amorous pursuits. Diana and Actaeon (Diana Surprised in Her Bath) 1836 Camille Corot French From its imposing size to its refined execution, this painting is elegant testimony to Corots ingenuity: the landscape appears surprisingly natural, yet it is painstakingly composed. The narrative, from Ovids Metamorphoses, recounts the fate of a young hunter Actaeon as he encounters the naked figure of the goddess Diana and her nymphs enjoying a woodland bath. Diana, in a fit of embarrassed fury, splashes water on the unwitting hunter, transforming him into a deer. There is a marked difference between the general tight handling of paint and tonal contrasts, and the background on the left, which is sketchy and silvery in tone, typical of Corots late style.
