Bust of a Woman of African Descent after 1794 After a model by Jean Antoine Houdon This small bust is a reduction of a life-sized painted plaster by Houdon in the Musée de Soissons, believed to have been exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1781. The Soissons plaster has traditionally been associated with the fountain made by Houdon for Louis Philippe Joseph dOrléans, duc de Chartres (the future duc d'Orléans) exotic English gardens designed by Carmontelle at Monceau, near Paris. Carmontelles guidebook of the gardens, published in 1779, apparently before the fountain had been installed, records a description of Houdons fountain group as consisting of a standing black servant pouring water over a white seated bather. This bather, now in the Museums collection (14.40.673), is the sole remnant of the extraordinary fountain group, the rest of which was destroyed during the French Revolution. It is likely that the Soissons bust was either a study for or derived directly from this servant fi

Jules Bastien-Lepage. Artist: Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, Dublin 1848-1907 Cornish, New Hampshire). Dimensions: 14 3/4 x 10 1/2 in. (37.5 x 26.7 cm). Date: 1880, cast 1910.Saint-Gaudens first met the artist Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) in 1868 while studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He renewed his acquaintance with the French painter upon his return to Paris in 1877, and, as Saint-Gaudens later recalled, Bastien-Lepage "asked if I would make a medallion of him in exchange for a portrait of myself. Of course I agreed to the proposal." The last and most ambitious of the medallions depicting artist-friends completed during the sculptor's French tenure (1877-80), this portrait announces a complete technical and compositional mastery of the bas-relief. The painter's compact form fills the right and center of the composition, while his palette and brushes command its lower third. His hair and beard are neatly kept, and he wears a jacket, shirt with upraised collar, and

A Hypocrite and a Slanderer ca. 1770-83 Franz Xaver Messerschmidt German Messerschmidt, the leading sculptor at the court in Vienna in the 1760s, was forced, for personal and professional reasons, to leave for the provinces and by 1777 had settled in Pressburg (today Bratislava). There he concentrated on a private series of heads, completing more than sixty in his preferred medium of tin alloy or in alabaster. While acknowledging the artistic tradition of exploring facial expressions and emotions, these Kopfstücke, or head pieces, as he called them, were highly original for their combination of realism and abstraction. Visitors to his studio observed the artist studying himself in a mirror. Some of the heads are straightforward self-portraits, smiling or frowning; others are satirical or comic, the sitter reacting to a strong odor or yawning widely. A few, such as this one, called refusers” by an early critic for the way they deny contact with their surroundings, are deeply introspecti

The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph.
