Resting Satyr. From Tivoli, 2nd century AD. A youthful satyr, wearing a panther skin across his chest, rests languidly against a tree. The statue was found in Hadrian's villa at Tivoli and is a close version of a statue probably by the Athenian sculptor Praxiteles of c350 BC. It was a very popular figure, known in some fifty Roman versions.

(123.8 × 79.1 × 64.5 cm, 388.3 kg). Date: modeled ca. 1887, carved 1893.The mythical poet Orpheus braved the underworld to rescue his dead wife, Eurydice. The gods allowed her ghost to follow him and regain life, provided that Orpheus did not look at her until both had reached the sunlit earth. Rodin depicts Eurydice's spirit floating in the underworld's dark entrance while Orpheus hesitates at the threshold. Because he cannot feel her phantom embrace, or hear her spectral voice, Orpheus turns to see if his beloved has come. An instant later he will glimpse her, and Eurydice will vanish. This exquisitely carved sculpture, one of the first Rodin works to come to America, is the only marble example of the composition. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Heracles finds his son Telephus.bRelief on the Pergamum Altar in the Pergamum Museum in Berlin. It is a monumental construction built during the reign of King Eumenes 11 in the first half of the 2nd century BC on one of the terraces of the acropolis of the ancient city of Pergamum in Asia Minor. It is 35.64 meters wide and 33.4 meters deep. The front stairway is almost 20 meters wide. The base is decorated with a frieze in high relief showing the battle between the Giants and Olympian gods known as the Gigantomachy. In 1878 the German engineer Carl Human began official excavations on the acropolis of Pergamum. The excavation was undertaken in order to rescue the altar friezes and expose the foundation of the edifice. Later, other ancient structures on the acropolis were brought to light.
