View of Haarlem and the Haarlemmer Meer 1646 Jan van Goyen Dutch The belltower of the church of Saint Bavo in Haarlem gives this small but extraordinary panoramic view an appearance of topographic accuracy. In fact, the landscape knits together features of several different drawings from Van Goyens sketchbooks, some observed from the heights of the belltower itself. The panoramic viewpoint and the use of atmospheric perspective, whereby the more distant elements appear green or blue, connect Van Goyens scene to the much earlier Netherlandish landscapes on view in this gallery.. View of The Hague. In the 19th century Rembrandt grew into the national hero of the Netherlands. In Amsterdam a statue was erected in his honour. For its ceremonial unveiling, the Parkzaal (a concert hall) was decorated with huge paintings of towns where he was thought to have worked. This is the sketch for the canvas Rembrandt in The Hague. In the distance one sees the silhouette of the city with the church tower of the Grote or Sint- Jacobskerk. Only later did it emerge that Rembrandt had never actually worked in The Hague.

Fantastic Landscape ca. 1765 Francesco Guardi Italian This imaginary landscape, or capriccio, is one of three in The Mets collection from the castle of Colloredo di Monte Albano, near Udine. Their sizes and shapes seem to have been adjusted by Guardi in the course of painting or immediately thereafter, probably in order to be fit into decorative plaster surrounds. Guardi built these picturesque compositions from rocky outcroppings, slanting tree trunks, and classical ruins, which are populated by fishermen and their families.. Fantastic Landscape 436595

Venice from the Bacino di San Marco ca. 1765-75 Francesco Guardi Italian This is a fairly early example of Guardis vedute paintings, and it depicts one of the most famous views of Venice: across the harbor basin are a series of buildings from the Mint, the incomplete facade of the church of Santa Maria della Pietà, and beyond. Toward the left are the library, bell tower and clock tower, San Marco, the twin columns of the Piazzetta, and the patterned brickwork facade of Palazzo Ducale. But it is the echo of the skylines in the busy shipping activity of the foreground that dominates the scene with a surfeit of watercraft, workmen, sails, rigs, and oars..
