Participants and observers from more than 25 countries are taking part in NATO exercise Bold Monarch 2011, the world's largest submarine rescue exercise. This 12-day exercise supports interoperability between all submarine rescue units.

IUU Fishing has replaced piracy as the leading global maritime security threat. The recent operation in support of counter-IUU fishing in the Eastern Pacific Ocean marked the first time in which the Coast Guard conducted high seas boardings and inspections under the SPRFMO.

Hopper dredge Essayons operates in the Columbia River near Cathlamet, Washington on July 25, 2022. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hopper dredge Essayons, operated by a merchant marine crew, was delivered to the Portland District in 1983. The Essayons helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River. Because of its size and dredging depth, the Essayons is particularly well-suited for dredging the larger coastal entrances and larger volume sand deposits in river channels.
