Sketchbook William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905). Sketchbook, 1867. Bound sketchbook with drawings in graphite on beige, moderately thick, smooth textured wove paper, Closed: 3 5/8 x 5 1/4 in. (9.2 x 13.3 cm). Richards was a prolific artist who, as a leading member of the American Pre-Raphaelites, embraced the Ruskinian principle of truth to nature. Sketching outdoors played a significant role in his quest for accuracy of representation. Throughout his long career and extensive travels, he seems to have always carried a sketchbook with him, filling the pages with drawings of the places he encountered. The Brooklyn Museum owns more than twenty-five of Richardss sketchbooks, including the ones on view here. Serving as pictorial diaries of his journeys, they also demonstrate the variety of his working methods, ranging from quickly rendered outlines to carefully modulated tonal compositions to finished color studies. Portrait of a (fantasized) English ship with Justitia on the Spiegel, Willem van de Velde (I), 1665 - 1693 drawing Portrait of a (fantasized) English ship with Justitia on the mirror. That this is a back pressure is evident from, among other things, the fact that the letters R and C and the weapon of England, the Stuart Royal Standard, are in mirror image. The letters must therefore be read as CR (Carolus Rex). It cannot be excluded that this is a fantasy ship. The drawing shows great similarities with two other worked back -and -dresses of the old Van de Velde in Rotterdam, one of which is wearing the inscription: Continuous ships has judged Vande / Naer Eÿgen Fantazunden / & Signed. Just like the drawing in the Rijksprentenkabinet, the English fantasy ships in Rotterdam have a sculpture of Lady Justitia, recognizable by sword and scales, on the mirror. Sketchbook John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Sketchbook, 1871-1872. Graphite, charcoal, watercolor and white chalk on paper, Sketchbook: 9 3/16 x 11 7/8 x 1/2 in. (23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum.
