Whalers ca. 1845 Joseph Mallord William Turner British Turner was seventy years old when Whalers debuted to mixed reviews at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1845. Its subject proved elusive, as the English novelist William Thackeray observed: "That is not a smear of purple you see yonder, but a beautiful whale, whose tail has just slapped a half-dozen whale-boats into perdition; and as for what you fancied to be a few zig-zag lines spattered on the canvas at hap-hazard, look! they turn out to be a ship with all her sails." Apparently Turner undertook the paintingwhich was returned to himfor the collector Elhanan Bicknell, who had made his fortune in the whale-oil business. Lighthouse in Breaking Waves. From 1870 the fishing village of Scheveningen grew rapidly into a modern seaside resort. Mesdag, however, rarely depicted the boulevard, or the new harbour that was built in 1904. He preferred to paint the traditional life of fishermen. This picture is an exception: a light-house, or rather a beacon. Signal lights, piers and the lighthouse were installed in Scheveningen only in the early 20th century.

Date: 1869 ().Although Homer made his professional headquarters in New York City from 1859 to 1883, he focused his art on rural and seaside life. He typically sketched and painted outdoors during the seasons of good weather, then referred to his studies to create more ambitious works in his urban studio. He probably painted this oil sketch during a visit to a popular beach resort in 1869. For the final canvas, also on view in this gallery, he expanded the foreground to accommodate three bathers, and enhanced the definition of the breaking wave.
