Calm Sea. Artist: Simon de Vlieger (Dutch, Rotterdam () ca. 1600/1601-1653 Weesp). Dimensions: 14 3/4 x 17 1/2 in. (37.5 x 44.5 cm). Date: after 1640.The influential marine painter Simon de Vlieger lived in Rotterdam and Delft before settling in Amsterdam about 1638. His silvery seascapes, like this one of about 1645-50, made a great impression upon Jan van de Cappelle (who owned nine paintings and over thirteen hundred drawings drawings by De Vlieger) and Willem van de Velde the Younger.
