The Mildmay Sea-Piece, plate 40 from Liber Studiorum Published 1812 England. The Liber Studiorum (Book of Studies) served as both a testament to Joseph Mallord William Turnerís achievement as a painter and an instruction manual for other artists. As opposed to artists who commissioned professional printmakers to reproduce their paintings, Turner made his etchings, and even some of his mezzotints, himself. He was involved in the entire process, making sure that each print measured up to his standards. San Francisco Pier David Paul Chun American Published by WPA 1943 Wage workers were commonly depicted by politically inclined artists who sought to express solidarity with their struggle, but over time, interest in the subject spread to artists who did not possess strong political ties. Labor scenes became ubiquitous in prints of the thirties, especially among those working at Federal Art Project printshops. Using new, experimental techniques for color lithography and screenprinting, printmakers created images of workers wielding drills, torches, and other tools central to urban construction and repair.
