Date: ca. 1765.The view is among the most famous that Venice affords and shows the harbor basin and shipping, and the waterfront from the Mint, at left, to the incomplete façade of the church of the Pietà and beyond. Toward the left are the library, the bell tower and the clock tower, San Marco, the twin columns of the Piazzetta, and the patterned brickwork façade of Palazzo Ducale. Beyond the imaginary foregound, the river Spaarne meanders toward the Haarlemmer Meer (Haarlem Lake), an inland body of fresh water that was filled in during the nineteenth century. Venice: The Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute Workshop of Francesco Guardi Italian Guardis views of Venice were hugely popular among eighteenth-century visitors to the city, but not all were by the artist himself: his workshop reproduced compositions and motifs based on his earlier paintings and drawings, while emulators took advantage of the market for the taste he had helped to set. These pendants include several elements known from Guardis drawings and were most likely executed by assistants in his studio, working on the modest scale that was perfectly suited to customers seeking a souvenir but not the financial commitment of a large painting by the master..
