Da Yu is best remembered for teaching the people techniques to tame rivers and lakes during an epic flood. The Xia era would also go down as the first dynasty in what would later become China with his son Qi following after his reign, the second of a total of 17 Xia emperors. Yu is one of the few Chinese rulers posthumously honored with the honorific 'the Great'.

This painting titled 'Ruby, Gold and Malachite' was done by English artist Henry Scott Tuke in the summer of 1902 and is housed in Guildhall Gallery in London. It is a good example of Tuke's style and was painting about two miles from Falmouth. Tuke was known for his sea and figure studies. The youth half in the boat became an engineer. The one in the red jacket, a world traveler; and the one with a paddle, a military man.

The Toilers of the Sea ca. 1880-85 Albert Pinkham Ryder American Ryder probably either selected or approved the title of this painting, which relates it to Victor Hugos famous 1866 novel of the same name (Les travailleurs de la mer, in the original French). The painting could illustrate any one of several scenes in that novel, which features a fisherman character whose personality and attitudes resemble Ryders own. The surface has changed and suffered over the years; still, as with most of Ryders works, the composition conveys the artists vision of the mystical relationship between people and nature..
