The Gulf Stream 1899 Winslow Homer American Homer was preoccupied with the power of the ocean, and often made it the subject of his art, whether at home on the coast of Maine or while traveling. The Gulf Stream is named after the strong Atlantic current that connected many of the locales where he liked to paint. Homer based this dramatic scene of imminent disaster on sketches and watercolors he had made during winter trips to the Bahamas in 1884 and 1898, after crossing the Gulf Stream several times. A man faces his demise on a dismasted, rudderless fishing boat, sustained by only a few stalks of sugarcane, while threatened by sharks and a distant waterspout. He is oblivious to the schooner on the left horizon, which Homer later added to the composition as a sign of hopeful rescue. Painted shortly after the death of his father, in 1898, the painting has been interpreted as an expression of the artists presumed sense of mortality and vulnerability. Having visited a landmark exhibition sponsored by the American Society of Painters in Water Colors in New York, Homer spent the summer of 1873 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the picturesque fishing port on Cape Ann, north of Boston. There, he undertook a series of small-scale watercolors depicting boys and girls rowing dories, sitting on the wharves, involved in modest tasks, or playing on the beach. These delightful images of childhood pastimes echo in subject and handling his oils of the same period, including the Museum's much-appreciated "Snap the Whip" (1872; acc. no. 50.41). Fishing Boats, Key West Winslow Homer American 1903 Although Homers title identifies this watercolor as Key West, Florida, it appears to show typical Bahamian fishing boats. From the seventeenth century, Bahamians had frequently traveled back and forth to Florida, and Key West is only about 280 miles west of Nassau, across the Gulf Stream. Following the U.S. Civil War, many Black Bahamians migrated to Key West, where they found familiar work (including turtling and salvaging). Here, Homer achieved brilliant atmospheric effects through the rapid application of fluid washes and the carefully calculated use of his white paper, which he reserved to indicate the boats side, sails, and light reflecting on the water. Lyrical graphite lines, especially evident in the rigging and sails, seem to imply a sea breeze.
