Barges at Pontoise. Artist: Camille Pissarro (French, Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas 1830-1903 Paris). Dimensions: 18 1/8 x 21 5/8 in. (46 x 54.9 cm). Date: 1876.In 1876 Pissarro undertook several views of the barges that transported goods along the Oise River to the bustling port of Pontoise, the town where he lived for many years. This canvas is the only one to show the boats up close, vividly accented with bold strokes of orange and green. So free is the handling that it is difficult to discern the figure on the prow of the barge at the left. Pissarro would return to this subject two decades later, in his scenes of the port traffic in Rouen and Paris (58.133, 1980.21.1). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Beach at Sainte-Adresse 1867 France. In the summer of 1867 Claude Monet stayed with his aunt in Sainte-Adresse, an affluent suburb of the port city of Le Havre in Normandy, where the artist grew up. Monet began the painting outdoors on an overcast day but likely revised the composition in his studio in view of other related canvases, especially the Metropolitan Museum of Artís Regatta at Sainte-Adresse (51.30.4). Technical analysis revealed that what started as a scene of yachts and tourists at the beach ultimately became a view of sailboats and local fishermen. Monet first exhibited this painting at the Impressionist exhibition of 1876, the second of eight independent exhibitions he mounted with a group of like-minded avant-garde artists who sought to present their work outside of Franceís traditional, state-sponsored Salon system.. Oil on canvas . Claude Monet

Houses on the Achterzaan. Artist: Claude Monet (French, Paris 1840-1926 Giverny). Dimensions: 18 x 26 3/8 in. (45.7 x 67 cm). Date: 1871.On the advice of the French painter Charles-François Daubigny, Claude Monet traveled to the Netherlands in 1871, where he painted this landscape of limpid waters and azure skies along the Achterzaan River in Zaandam. Writing to fellow Impressionist Camille Pissarro, Monet noted the pleasures of painting the picturesque Dutch landscape: "This is a superb place for painting. There are the most amusing things everywhere: hundreds of windmills and enchanting boats, extremely friendly Dutchmen..." Using a limited palette of varying shades of green, Monet has captured the hazy atmosphere and light-dappled water of this picturesque Dutch port. Monet's Dutch landscapes were widely admired by other contemporary artists, especially Daubigny, whose own studies of light and water share an affinity. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Quai au Sable, Chartèves, 1904. Léon Augustin Lhermitte (French, 1844-1925). Pastel; framed: 94.3 x 124.2 x 8 cm (37 1/8 x 48 7/8 x 3 1/8 in.); overall: 69 x 99 cm (27 3/16 x 39 in.). Lhermitte began making pastels in 1885, the year of the first exhibition of the Société des Pastellistes de France. He rapidly assumed an important position within the group, and his frequent contributions to their exhibitions were regularly praised. Pastels such as this one combine two different ways of handling the medium: a vigorous approach suitable for a sketchas in the skyand a precisely rendered styleas in the view of the autumnal trees and the village across the Marne River. His luminescent, atmospheric effects owe a debt to Impressionism.

Boats on the Beach at Étretat 1885 France. Forced indoors by inclement fall weather, Claude Monet painted Boats on the Beach at tretat and The Departure of the Boats, tretat while looking out the window of his room at the HÙtel Blanquet. The two form a pair that share a palette, subject, and vantage point. In one of his daily letters to his companion and future wife, Alice HoschedÈ, dated November 24, 1885, Monet he described first Boats on the Beach and then Departure of the Boats ìIn the afternoon, I worked in my room on my caloges [retired fishing boats covered with tarred planks and used for storage in the rain, then I attempted to do, always through the window, a picture of the boats departing.îMonet centered each composition on the boats, combining pastel blues, pinks, purples, and greens to render wet surfaces. The brightly colored hulls of beached crafts lend relative scale to the structures in Boats on the Beach, and the groups of figures at the waterís edge, composed of qu

The Lock at Pontoise, 1872. Camille Pissarro (French, 1830-1903). Oil on fabric; framed: 76.8 x 105.7 x 11.4 cm (30 1/4 x 41 5/8 x 4 1/2 in.); unframed: 53 x 83 cm (20 7/8 x 32 11/16 in.). Pissarro was instrumental in developing the radically new Impressionist technique of painting quickly outdoors to capture fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. The rushing water and overcast sky in this view of a river lock near the artists home at Pontoise, a rural commune about 17 miles northwest of Paris, are rendered with rapid, broken brushstrokes of pure color. Painting directly on canvas without preliminary drawing, Pissarro may have executed this work in a single session. The shimmering surface of broken color conveys the sensation of natural, outdoor light.

Watering Place at Marly 1875 France. In 1875 Alfred Sisley moved to the village of Marly-le-Roi, so named because Louis XIV built an elegant country retreat there. The artist lived on the rue de líAbreuvoir, which flanked the pool featured on the left of this canvas. The pool was all that remained of the water gardens that had been part of the kingís park. Of the original Impressionist group, Sisley remained most faithful to his early landscape subjects, spending most of his life painting in the villages along the Seine River, in the region referred to as the cradle of Impressionism.. Regatta at Sainte-Adresse. Artist: Claude Monet (French, Paris 1840-1926 Giverny). Dimensions: 29 5/8 x 40 in. (75.2 x 101.6 cm). Date: 1867.Monet spent the summer of 1867 at Sainte-Adresse, a well-to-do suburb of Le Havre on the Normandy coast. On June 25, he reported that he had about twenty pictures under way, noting, "Among the seascapes, I am doing the regattas of Le Havre with many figures on the beach and the outer harbor covered with small sails." This sunny regatta, watched at high tide by well-dressed bourgeois, seems to have been conceived as a pair with The Beach at Sainte-Adresse (Art Institute of Chicago), an overcast scene at low tide, showing fishing boats hauled onto the beach, peopled with sailors and workers.
