The length of the animal had 58 feet. Van de Velde documents the event with this print. He shows the workmen who deal with the great fish and the fashionably dressed spectators on the beach. Title Page Design for Playsante landschappen. Visscher acquired the plates for 35 landscape prints from the estate of Jan van de Velde II in 1641. For the intended publication he designed a title page, in which he incorporated his trademark: a fisherman presents a sketchbook with landscapes that Van de Velde had dawn from life (in situ) - a rare occurrence at the time. Another depiction was ultimately used as the title page.

Gaultier, or Galter, was a French engraver, born at Mainz about 1561, and died in Paris in 1641. According to Greek Mythology, Bacchus (Dionysus), desired to sail from Icaria to Naxos. He hired a Tyrrhenian pirate ship. However, when the god was on board, they sailed not to Naxos but to Asia, intending to sell him as a slave. So Dionysus turned the mast and oars into snakes, and filled the vessel with ivy and the sound of flutes so that the sailors went mad.
