Larry Calame, a master on the Essayons, one of two hopper dredges owned and operated by the Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is one of only a few plankownerscrewmembers who have served aboard a vessel since the time it was first placed in commissioncurrently working on the Portland Districts hopper dredge fleet. He began working on the Essayons in 1982, a full year before it was commissioned in Astoria, Oregon. The Essayons, operated by a merchant marine crew, helps maintain the entrance bars, rivers and harbors on the coasts of California, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska and, in emergencies, the Mississippi River.
