Millions of years of alternating seasons have created the north polar cap. Ice is laid down during the winter and dust coats the ice in summer. The ice/dust cycle creates layers as the cap grows. This VIS image shows part of Tempe Fossae. Tempe Fossae is a series of tectonic graben that cross Tempe Terra. The downward movement of blocks of material between bounding faults create a feature known as a graben. The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image. This image of Neptune's south polar region was obtained by NASA's Voyager on Aug. 23, 1989. The image shows the discovery of shadows in Neptune's atmosphere, shadows cast onto a deep cloud bank by small elevated clouds.

Many of the impact craters of Venus revealed by NASA's Magellan spacecraft have characteristics unlike craters on any other planetary body. This crater, named Adivar, is located just north of the western Aphrodite highland.

Using Methane Absorption to Probe Jupiter's Atmosphere

This stereo view from the Navigation Camera (Navcam) on NASA's Curiosity Mars rover shows the terrain ahead of the rover as it makes its way westward through a valley called Artist's Drive. The image appears three-dimensional when viewed through red-blue glasses with the red lens on the left. Making Tracks on Mars (polar)

AS12-48-7160 (19-20 Nov. 1969) --- This view of the lunar surface was taken by one of the two astronauts on the Apollo 12 mission during their extravehicular activity. Seen in this view are the U.S. flag, several astronaut footprints, and a small crater near their Lunar Module landing site. Astronaut Charles Conrad Jr., commander, and Alan L. Bean, lunar module pilot, descended in the Lunar Module to explore the lunar surface. Astronaut Richard F. Gordon Jr., command module pilot, remained with Command and Service Modules in lunar orbit.

This stereo view was taken by the panoramic camera on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit on the rover's 87th martian day, or sol (April 1, 2004), just after Spirit left 'Bonneville Crater.' 3D glasses are necessary to view this image.

NASA's Terra spacecraft shows Popocatepetl, the nearly 18.000-foot-high volcano about 40 miles southeast of Mexico City, continuing to spew water vapor, gas, ashes and glowing rocks from its latest eruption, which started in mid-April 2012.

This Magellan image is centered in the eastern Ovda region of Venus.

This mosaic of images collected by NASAs Galileo spacecraft on Thanksgiving Day, November 25,1999 shows a fountain of lava spewing above the surface of Jupiters moon Io. The active lava was hot enough to cause what the camera team describes as bleeding in Galileos camera, caused when the cameras detector is so overloaded by the brightness of the target that electrons spill down across the detector. This shows up as a white blur in the image.

Spirit's View on Sol 399 (Polar)

The Mast Camera (Mastcam) on NASA's Curiosity Mars rover captured this view of Vera Rubin Ridge about two weeks before the rover started ascending this steep ridge on lower Mount Sharp. The view combines 13 images taken with the Mastcam's right-eye, telephoto-lens camera, on Aug. 19, 2017, during the 1,790th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's work on Mars. This and other Mastcam panoramas show details of the sedimentary rocks that make up the Vera Rubin Ridge. This distinct topographic feature located on the lower slopes of Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons) is characterized by the presence of hematite, an iron-oxide mineral, which has been detected from orbit. The Mastcam images show that the rocks making up the lower part of the ridge are characterized by distinct horizontal stratification with individual rock layers of the order of several inches (tens of centimeters) thick. Scientists on the mission are using such images to determine the ancient environment these rocks were deposited in. T

jsc2011e118361 - Panorama view of Apollo 15 lunar module pilot James B. Irwin, using a scoop in making a trench in the lunar soil during the second moonwalk of the mission. The panoramas were built by combining Apollo 15 images starting with frame AS15-92-12420 thru end frame AS15-92-12438. The panoramic images received minimal retouching by NASA imagery specialists, including the removal of lens flares that were problematic in stitching together the individual frames and blacking out the sky to the lunar horizon. These adjustments were made based on observations of the Moon walkers who reported that there are no stars visible in the sky due to the bright lunar surface reflection of the Sun.
