Composed of multiple images from NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, this mosaic shows a rocky outcrop called Wildcat Ridge, where the rover extracted two rock cores and abraded a circular patch to investigate the rock's composition. The site is in the delta, a fan-shaped area where, billions of years ago, a river once flowed into a lake in Jezero Crater. Scientists consider this area one of the best places on Mars to search for potential signs of ancient microbial life. The images were obtained by the Mastcam-Z instrument on Aug. 4, 2022, the 518th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's mission. For scale, the bright circular abrasion patch on the right is approximately 2 inches (5 centimeters) in diameter. The color bands of the image have been processed to improve visual contrast and accentuate color differences. The rock cores obtained by Perseverance - each about the size of a piece of classroom chalk - were sealed in ultra-clean sample tubes. They are currently stored in the rover's Sam

6145-45251790
This view of rock layers exposed in the upper portion of the inner slope of Endurance Crater was captured by the navigation camera on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity from the rover's position inside the crater during Opportunity's 134th sol on June 9, 2004. Scientists and engineers are assessing possible targets and routes among these rocks. The view is looking down into the crater, so the layers at the top of the image lie lower in the crater than the rocks in the foreground. http //photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA06263

This colour image taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirits panoramic camera on Sol 40 is centred on an unusually flaky rock called Mimi. Mimi is only one of many features in the area known as Stone Council, but looks very different from any rock that scientists have seen at the Gusev crater site so far. Mimis flaky appearance leads scientists to a number of hypotheses. Mimi could have been subjected to pressure either through burial or impact, or may have once been a dune that was cemented into flaky layers, a process that sometimes involves the action of water.

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity captured this southward uphill view after beginning to ascend the northwestern slope of 'Solander Point' on the western rim of Endeavour Crater.
6145-45252051
This false-color composite panoramic camera image highlights mysterious and sparkly dust-like material that is created when the soil in this region is disturbed. NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit took this image on sol 165 (June 20, 2004) in Hank's Hollow, using filters L2, L5 and L7. http //photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA06358

Curiosity Views Rhythmic Rock Layers. NASA's Curiosity Mars rover captured this image of rhythmic rock layers with a repetitive pattern in their spacing and thickness. The pattern might have been caused by weather or climate cycles occurring while the sediment layers were being deposited, such as dust storms happening at regular intervals in the ancient past. This mosaic is made up of 17 individual images captured in the Marker Band area by Curiosity's Mastcam on Nov. 7, 2022, the 3,646th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. The mosaic was captured by Mastcam's 34-millimeter-focal-length camera. https //photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA25734
