ISS001-E-05318 (December 2000) --- The Upsala Glacier in Argentina was featured in this image photographed by an Expedition One crewmember onboard the International Space Station (ISS). This is the third largest glacier of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field with an estimated area of over 800 square kilometers. This long, north-south oriented river of ice terminates in the northern arm of Lake Argentino. This same area was photographed during the eighth expedition of the International Space Station just over 3 years later; reference photo no. ISS008-E-11807 under the Expedition 8 section of the Human Space Flight website.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover will rely on data depicted in this Hazard Map to help guide it to a safe landing. Landing hazards are depicted in red; safer areas are colored blue and green. To select the best location to touch down while avoiding damage to the rover, the spacecraft's Terrain-Relative Navigation system will take images of the terrain below as Perseverance descends through the atmosphere. Computers aboard the rover will then compare these images with its onboard map the best ever created for a space mission and adjust course as needed. Terrain-Relative Navigation has enabled the mission to select Jezero Crater as its landing site. Scientists believe an ancient river flowed into a lake there and deposited sediments in a fan shape known as a delta. Such an environment was likely to have preserved signs of any life that gained a foothold billions of years ago. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- This 100-pound Mundrabilla meteorite sample is being studied in Wyle Laboratory's Nondestructive Testing Laboratory at KSC. The one-of-a-kind meteorite was found 36 years ago in Australia and is on loan to Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) from the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Donald Gillies, discipline scientist for materials science at MSFC's Microgravity Science and Applications Department, is the Principal Investigator. The studies may help provide the science community and industry with fundamental knowledge for use in the design of advanced materials.

The Mississippi River continually evolves and changes course, as these two images testify. Harold Fisk's 1944 map (Figure 1) covers a stretch of the river between Friars Point and Gunnison, Mississippi. The March 31, 2017 image clearly shows the changing course of the main channel that has taken place in the intervening 73 years. The image covers an area of 39.2 by 56.3 km, and is located at 34.1 degrees north, 90.4 degrees west.

STS072-738-036 (11-20 Jan. 1996) --- The astronauts used a 70mm handheld camera to expose this frame of the west-flowing Orange River, which constitutes the international boundary between Namibia and the Republic of South Africa. The railroad and highway connecting the two countries is seen as a ribbon crossing the corner of the view. The broad color difference between strong browns/reds in the northern half of the view and lighter yellows in the southern corresponds to two land surfaces. The darker is a higher, flat land surface developed on horizontal Nama Sandstones, with rock surfaces widely coated with a dark manganese stain, typical of desert regions. This region is known as Namaqualand and borders the Namib Desert. Where rivers have cut down into this surface, the lighter underlying rock and soil colors show up.
