This prominent circular feature, known as the Richat Structure, in the Sahara desert of Mauritania is often noted by astronauts because it forms a conspicuous 50-kilometer-wide (30-mile-wide) bulls-eye on the otherwise rather featureless expanse of the desert. Initially mistaken for a possible impact crater, it is now known to be an eroded circular anticline (structural dome) of layered sedimentary rocks. This view was generated from a Landsat satellite image draped over an elevation model produced by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). taken in 2000.

Worm (Bonellia viridis). It is a species of marine worm known for the exceptional sexual dimorphism it presents: the female has its body divided into two parts, the proboscis and the trunk. The trunk, which has a canal in the middle, ends in a wavy fork and can measure up to 1 meter in length; The trunk has a globose appearance and measures between 5 and 15 cm approximately. Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera image of Hebes Chasma.Hebes Chasma is an enclosed trough, almost 8000 m deep, in Valles Marineris, the Grand Canyon of Mars, showing Light Toned Deposits. This is an area where water is believed to have flowed. An analysis of data and images from Mars Express suggests that several Light Toned Deposits, some of the least understood structures on Mars, were formed when large amounts of groundwater burst on to the surface. Scientists propose that groundwater had a greater role in shaping the Martian surface than previously believed, and may have sheltered primitive life forms as the planet started drying up. Hebes Chasma is located at approximately 1° south and 282° east. Image data was obtained on 16 September 2005 with a ground resolution of approximately 15 m/pixel.

Phytoplankton are microscopic marine plants that form the first link in nearly all ocean food chains. Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fueling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants.
