Gypsy Mother with Three Children 1650s Cornelis Visscher This image of a woman breastfeeding an infant in the presence of two other children follows a well-established iconography for personifications of Charity (see, for example, 51.501.2273 and, especially, 53.601.1684). In its emphasis on the desperate circumstances of the figures—made explicit by the Latin caption—it also bears a close relationship with an allegory of Poverty engraved by Zacharias Dolendo after a design by Jacques de Gheyn II in 1596-97 (49.95.1239). Visscher, however, sheds the allegorical language of such precedents in favor of a naturalistic approach that frames the scene as one of contemporary life. Notably, the child at far left, while reminiscent of figures in 53.601.1684 and 49.95.1239, also recalls children in the work of Rembrandt, for example the little boy in the foreground of The Pancake Woman (17.21.58), another, if very different treatment, of hunger.This print was published by Clement de Jonghe,

Madonna Seated with Christ Child Standing (also known as The Infant Samuel and His Mother). By Hugo Van Der Goes (1467 - 1482). Flemish painter, the most important Ghent painter of the period. Dated 15th Century.

(45.72 × 33.02 cm), Woodcut printed from two blocks on two sheets of paper, Germany, 16th century, Virgin and Child was clearly meant to be seen from a distance. The large, uncluttered composition allows the flowing lines to stand out. Its creator, Sebald Beham, meant it for public devotion of the Madonna. He used simple patterns of lines to make the cutting of the printing block quicker and cheaper, an important consideration for a work of art intended for a middle-class market. Most examples were probably affixed to walls and have long since perished from exposure to weather, insects, and vandalism. Of the hundreds printed, only about a dozen survive.
