Silver Star for Gallantry in Action. Coast Guard Captain Roger C. Heimer, of Milwaukee, Wis., skipper of a Coast-Guard manned combat transport through three Mediterranean invasions, pins the Silver Star medal on the jumper of Navy Coxswain William J. Brown of Greenville, South Carolina, for Brown's role in the Salerno beachhead. The award by Admiral H. K. Hewitt cited the coxswain's "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" in leading a group of Army "ducks" through mined waters of Salerno Bay.

William Kirk Scammell, 1947. Commodore W. K. Scammell, commanding Coast Guard forces in the 12th Naval District, is shown pinning the Bronze Star medal on Lieut (jg) Alvis D. Arnhart, USCGR, of Lonoke, Ark., during a regimental review at the Coast Guard Barracks in San Francisco. Lieut. Arnhart was awarded the decoration by Admiral Harold Stark, commander of U.S. Naval forces in Europe "for meritorious service as commanding officer of a U.S. cutter in rescuing survivors off the coast of France on June 6, 1944." Arnhart's cutter, the citation reveals, "went alongside a landing ship tank in sinking condition, tied up to the stricken vessel, and the crew went aboard, rescuing 22 men from the wreckage, 19 of whom had to be removed on stretchers. The landing craft sank so quickly it was necessary to chop the mooring lines in order to keep the cutter from sinking with her." Attached to the citation from Admiral Stark were the personal congratulations of Rear Admiral L. T. Chalker and Commodo
