Portrait medal of George the Bearded (duke of Saxony) (obverse); coat of arms (reverse) 1537 Attributed to Peter Flötner German George the Bearded, Duke of Saxony, was one of the more enlightened German princes in the early years of the Reformation. Known as an outstanding ruler, high-minded and deeply concerned for his subjects, he maintained an unerring loyalty to the Holy Roman Emperor. While he initially supported Martin Luthers Protestant reforms, George ultimately remained a staunch Catholic. This medals inscription translates as "His praise shall always be in my mouth." The reverse depicts his coat of arms.. Portrait medal of George the Bearded (duke of Saxony) (obverse); coat of arms (reverse). Philip Melanchthon model 1543 (possibly cast 16th century) Friedrich Hagenauer German On the obverse is a portrait of the scholar and religious reformer Philip Melanchthon (1497 - 1560); there is text on the reverse. This is the second type of two medals that Hagenauer made of Melanchthon. Both are dated 1543, but the first has an I” added under the year XLVI” of the reformer’s age.(1) This annotation indicates that the model for the medal was probably carved in Melanchthon’s forty-sixth year and cast after his forty-seventh birthday on 16 February 1543. On the second type, probably dating from later that year, the lettering was rearranged to XLVII.” Melanchthon sat for Hagenauer in Cologne during a convention organized by Archbishop Hermann von Wied, which was attended by the Lutheran reformer to mediate between Catholics and Protestants. The piece is possibly a sixteenth-century aftercast.. Philip Melanchthon 461378

Maximilian I (22 March 1459 - 12 January 1519), the son of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, and Eleanor of Portugal, was King of the Romans (also known as King of the Germans) from 1486 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death, though he was never in fact crowned by the Pope, the journey to Rome always being too risky. He had ruled jointly with his father for the last ten years of his father's reign, from c. 1483. He expanded the influence of the House of Habsburg through war and his marriage in 1477 to Mary of Burgundy, the heiress to the Duchy of Burgundy, but he also lost the Austrian territories in today's Switzerland to the Swiss Confederacy.
