Quarter guilders, emergency coin from Leiden, beaten during the siege, city of Leiden, 1574 coin. siege coin Emergency coin from Leiden: quarter guilders. Made from compressed magazines of misbooks. Quarter guilders. Front: Climbing lion to the left, the sword highlights in the right front leg and a shield on which two keys (weapon of the city of Leiden) in the left front leg. Above a crown and under an ethnic brand (lion) with a change. Reverse: inside Lauwerkrans inscription in four lines. Gold; diameter: 2.1 cm (13/16 in.). The coinage of Anne's reign remained fairly constant after the inaugural design in 1662. Before the Act of Union with Scotland (1706), the arms of England and Scotland remained separate, as shown. After the act the two arms were conjoined on one shield. The word Vigo indicates the coins were struck from gold captured from the Spanish at the Battle of Vigo Bay (1702).
