In a mouse model, researchers have developed a way to attract immune cells to the site of injury and promote the formation of new blood vessels. The study suggests that we should take advantage of the body's own responses for tissue repair and regeneration. Blood vessels (gray) widen and branch in areas where large numbers of anti-inflammatory monocytes (multicolored dots) have been recruited by the signaling molecule, SDF-1a.

Hubble Provides Infrared View of Jupiter's Moon, Ring, and Clouds

Using state-of-the-art brain imaging technology, scientists at the National Institutes of Health have filmed what is happening in the brains of mice that developed cerebral malaria (CM). The findings, published in PLOS Pathogens, produced the processes that lead to the fatal outcome of the disease and prompt antibody therapy that could treat it.

These gels were obtained by two-dimensional (2D) electrophoresis, in which proteins move different substances through a polyacrylamide gel matrix based on their molecular weight and total charge in an electric field. The gels illustrate principal investigator David Niesels findings that exposure to modeled microgravity results in some Streptoccoccus Pneumonias proteins being upregulated and others being downregulated. In 2D protein profiles of whole cell lysates of Streptoccoccus Pneumonia, 6,304 cultured under normal gravity (left), appear to be expressed at higher levels indicated with black circles. NGC 3603 is a bustling region of star birth in the Carina spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy, about 20,000 light-years from Earth. For the first time, this Chandra image resolves the multitude of individual x-ray sources in this star-forming region. (The intensity of the x-rays observed by Chandra are depicted by the various colors in this image. Green represents lower intensity sources, while purple and red indicate increasing x-ray intensity.) Specifically, the Chandra image reveals dozens of extremely massive stars born in a burst of star formation about 2 million years ago. This region's activities may be indicative of what is happening in other distant starburst galaxies (bright galaxies flush with new stars). In the case of NGC 3603, scientists now believe that these x-rays are emitted from massive stars and stellar winds, since the stars are too young to have produced supernovae or have evolved into neutron stars. This image integrates the thousands of known molecular and genetic interactions that occur inside our bodies using a computer program called Cytoscape. Images like this are known as network wiring diagrams, but Cytoscape creator Trey Ideker jokingly calls them quothairballs and quot because they can be so convoluted, complex, and difficult to unravel. Cytoscape comes with tools to help scientists assess specific interactions, such as differences between species or between diseased and diseased cells.

In this composite image taken by Juno's Stellar Reference Unit, the arrows point to small lightning flashes observed on Jupiter's cloud tops; the magnified insets show how they appeared in the science imager. The small size is evidence that the lighting is shallow, originating at unexpectedly high altitudes where it is too cold for liquid water to exist. Designed to detect dim stars, the Stellar Reference Unit's optics enable identification of tiny points of light. The data for this composite was taken by the Stellar Reference Unit on Feb. 7, 2018. The solar-powered Jupiter explorer launched on Aug. 5, 2011 and went into orbit around the gas giant on July 4, 2016.

CT scans of the spcimens on STS-79 reveal internal cone-shaped features and radial patterns not seen in specimens processed on the ground. The lighter areas are the densest in these images. CT scans produced richly detailed images allowing scientists to build 3D models of the interior of the specimens that can be compared with microscopic examination of thin slices. These views depict vertical slices from side to middle of a flight specimen. Sand and soil grains have faces that can cause friction as they roll and slide against each other, or even cause sticking and form small voids between grains. This complex behavior can cause soil to behave like a liquid under certain conditions such as earthquakes or when powders are handled in industrial processes.
