Standard Bearer 15th-early 16th century Aztec Wearing a simple loincloth tied in front in a prominent knot, this strong male figure is seated on a massive block. The elaborate lashings of his sandals suggest that he is an individual belonging to a high social class, since commoners in Aztec society went mostly barefoot. The facial contours are rounded and soft, and there is a slight frown on the forehead; his mouth is half open as if speaking. His almond-shaped eyes once held inlays. The curved, deeply grooved line across the top of the face indicates the hairline, but the head itself is smooth with no striations to indicate hair. The man's upper body leans slightly forward, and the knees are held close against the chest. His left hand, carved in relief, rests on the left knee, while the right, now damaged, is a hollow fist supported by his right knee. Fragment of a Figure 4th-7th century Coptic This hand-molded object was found in Christian homes, but works like this continue a long history of Egyptian fertility figures. Decorated wall niches, thought to be domestic shrines, were found in the houses of the site. This figurine might have been used in one as a votive offering. Hatshepsut Wearing the khat Headdress ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This statue is one of only two that portray Hatashepsut as a woman. Here she is shown wearing a sheath dress and a khat-headcloth. She also wears a broad collar necklace, cuff bracelets, and wide anklets. Suspended around her neck on a string of tubular beads is the same enigmatic amulet seen on two of the colossal kneeling statues in the collection (29.3.1, 30.3.2). The seated pose indicates that Hatshepsut is the recipient of cult offerings, so the statue was probably placed in one of the chapels on the middle or upper terrace of the temple.Although represented as a woman, she is also clearly identified as ruler. Incised into the stone beneath her feet are nine bows, representing the symbolic enemies of Egypt and the inscriptions on either side of the throne record her royal titulary, but here the titles and epithets are written with feminine endings. In the text next to her right leg she is called the "Good Goddess

Standing statue of Merti's wife ca. 2381-2323 B.C. probably Old Kingdom Merti was a high official and provincial governor. Eleven exceptionally large wooden statues were found in the serdab (statue chamber) of his tomb. Five are in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (26.2.2 - 26.2.6); five, including two wooden scribes, are in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo; and one is in the Medlhavsmuseet, Stockholm. Most of these statues represent Merti in various aspects of his life and career, denoted by changes in wigs and garments. Standing Female Figure 1st century San Sebastián Imposing by virtue of its size, nudity, and outsized legs with exaggerated, arched feet, this female figure is sculpted in a style known as San Sebastián. The hollow figure is highly decorated, including an elaborate hairstyle indicated by incisions. She wears an appliqued headband composed of two ropes, each of which has four symmetrical sets of four punctures; the band encircles an oval-shaped air vent on the crown of her head. Carved, open eyes painted white along with her open, sculpted mouth revealing incised teeth, make the figures expression appear alert. Appliqued earrings with five to six loops are suspended from each earlobe, and she wears an elaborate three-strand necklace modeled in clay from which a five-piece appliqued ornament is suspended in front. Fifteen appliqued pellets, set in a symmetrical pattern, adorn each shoulder. The sculpture retains its burnished surfaces slipped in red, gold, and pink. Traces of checkered
