Date: 500-600.The Visigoths enjoyed lively commercial contacts with lands all around the Mediterranean. This pendant reveals the familiarity of their artists with motifs from Greece and the Near East. Above the heads of the beasts is the loop through which a harness strap could be passed. Scarab Inscribed for the God's Wife Hatshepsut. Dimensions: L. 1.6 cm (5/8 in); w. 1.2 cm (1/2 in); h. 0.7 cm (1/4 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 18, early. Reign: Joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. Date: ca. 1479-1458 B.C..This scarab was found in a foundation deposit associated with Hatshepsut's funerary temple at Deir el-Bahri. The base is inscribed with her personal name, Hatshepsut ("foremost of noblewomen") linked with the title God's Wife. Hatshepsut inherited the title while she served as principal queen of her half-brother, Thutmose II. Stucco relief panel. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H. 14 in (35.6 cm); width 13 3/8 in (34 cm); depth 2 3/4 in (7 cm). Date: mid-1st century A.D..Stucco played an important role in Roman construction and interior design. In its simplest form, it provided an attractive smooth surface for walls and columns built of rough masonry and brick. Since stucco was applied wet, its surface could also be shaped with either a template or a mold to provide a decorative architectural framework for wall frescoes. Stucco was also extensively employed to cover ceilings, especially barrel vaults in the halls, corridors, and rooms of large houses, in public buildings such as baths, and in tombs. These ceilings could be extremely elaborate, including panels with figures modeled freehand in situ. The eight ceiling panels displayed here belong to this last category. Marble pillar with Neo-Attic reliefs. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: H.: 39 5/8 in. (100.6 cm). Date: late 1st century B.C.-early 1st century A.D..A fine example of classicizing art, this marble pillar bears on all four sides reliefs in the Neo-Attic style. The themes are drawn from the world of Dionysus. A flowering acanthus plant carved in low relief occupies one of the long sides, while on the other, in higher relief, two female figures with billowing garments surmount a Silenus herm. Their attributes identify them as Horae, the personifications of the Seasons. At the top is summer holding a garland in one hand and a sheaf of wheat in the other. At the bottom, autumn carries pomegranates and bunches of grapes in the fold of her himation, while a third figure, now missing, most probably represented spring. Fangjia wine vessel, 13th-12th century BCE, 13 3/4 × 9 1/8 × 8 7/16 in., 13 lb. (34.93 × 23.18 × 21.43 cm, 5.9 kg), Bronze, China, 13th-12th century BCE, Jia were among the earliest Chinese bronze vessels cast during the Erlitou period (c. 2000-1600 BCE). Archaeological excavations have found more jia and jue (another type of wine cup) than ding cauldrons, which held food. This suggests that people of the Erlitou period emphasized the role of wine in ritual ceremonies. Jia became prevalent during the Shang and early Western Zhou dynasties (c. 1600-977 BCE) and gradually fell out of favor and then disappeared during the late Western Zhou (c. 885-771 BCE). It was fashionable in the late Shang to make square variations on originally round types of vesselshence, a new type of jia emerged. Known as fangjia, or 'squared jia,' it had a quadrangular shape and a rectangular or square cross section. Plaque in the form of a sphinx. Dimensions: 4.87 x 3.87 in. (12.37 x 9.83 cm). Date: ca. 8th century B.C..Hammered from single sheets of bronze, these sphinxes look outward toward the viewer. Their striding poses mirror each other and suggest that they may once have been displayed approaching each other. While many of the incised details are the same, differences such as the position of the hair swirl on the chest indicate that two separate craftspeople may have been responsible for the decorative work. The supernatural character of the sphinx, a composite creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion, is an ancient royal symbol of Egypt. Here the sphinx is further enhanced with the addition of wings, an ancient Near Eastern innovation.The Levant and inland Syria were conquered in the eighth century B.C. by the Assyrian kings. Sarcophagus with a Greek Physician early 300s Roman The tomb's owner is shown seated with an open scroll, the pose of a philosopher, demonstrating that he is a learned man. His profession can be identified by the open case containing surgical tools on the cabinet top. Other scrolls and a basin for bleeding patients within the cabinet offer further proof of his profession. The style of his dress and the language of the inscription indicate that he was one of the many Greeks living in Italy. Beginning in the 300s, Christians would adopt in their art the philosopher pose and the undulating motifs, or strigils, that appear on the sides of the sarcophagus.. The base is inscribed with her personal name, Hatshepsut ("foremost of noblewomen") linked with the title God's Wife. Hatshepsut inherited the title while she served as principal queen of her half-brother, Thutmose II. Later in her life, after taking on the titles of King, Hatshepsut passed the title to her daughter, Neferure (see scarab 27.3.326).The back of the seal amulet has been inscribed with the image of a tilapia fish eating water plants.
