These two armors were incomplete and badly damaged when acquired by the Museum in 1911. This armor was developed for the joust-a sporting combat between two mounted contestants. Although all of the elements of this armor date from the same period, they are not all from the same suit. This armor is thus called "composed." It also shows the asymmetry of jousting armor. The participants rode along a wall-like barrier known as a "tilt" with their left sides facing one another. Consequently, armor on that side of the body had to be thicker. Note the large plate (grandguard) over the left shoulder for extra protection. Also, the breathing holes in the helmet were placed on the right side (farthest from an opponent's lance) to avoid injuries from splinters. The bracket attached to the right breastplate is called the lance-rest, a shock-absorbing support designed to accommodate the lance when "couched" under the right armpit.Helmet knight military icon. Date: ca. 1585-86.This armor was made for Henry Herbert (1534-1601) in the royal workshops at Greenwich. Originally, it consisted of a garniture for field and tournament. The present burgonet (helmet) and falling buffe (face defense) were designed for light cavalry and infantry use. Among the garniture's missing elements are two close helmets and several reinforcing pieces for the tournament, similar to those preserved with the Cumberland garniture also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 32.130.6a-y).Herbert's antiquarian and heraldic interests are reflected in the armor's decoration, which traces the lineage of the great Pembroke family through its complex coat of arms, consisting of twenty-two quarterings. With its sliding nasal bar, brim, earflaps, and neck guard, the design offered protection from sword cuts with optimal peripheral vision. The design was adapted from Turkish helmets of the 16th century. The style spread to Hungary and Poland and by the mid-17th century was found throughout Europe. This Flemish example comes from the armory of a Spanish noble family.. Greek, Cretan These helmets and the three mitrai exhibited below them are the finest pieces of a large cache of armor that came to light in southern central Crete, where it was undoubtedly made. The inscriptions suggest that the armor was captured as booty and offered as a dedication. In repoussé on both sides of one helmet is a pair of winged youths grasping a pair of intertwined snakes. Below them are two panthers with a common head. The helmet is inscribed "Neopolis." In repoussé on both sides of the other helmet is a horse; incised on each cheekpiece is a lion. The inscription states that Synenitos, the son of Euklotas, took this object. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #1007. Roman Period This is a unique example of a priestly headdress otherwise known only from tomb reliefs and paintings. Consisting of a wig with short, tight curls and a distinctive gilded sidelock, it may have been found (and once worn) with a leopard-skin robe. In all likelihood, a man serving as a sem-priest donned the headdress and cloak before carrying out a ritual that revivified a mummified body so that the deceased could live eternally.. They not only are extremely carefully crafted but also have a slightly narrower bore than regular orchestral French horns. Only a few shops, most of them in Lyon and Paris, were able to build excellent, easy-speaking cors solo with refined workmanship and balanced sound qualities. This cor solo, dated 1829, is the earliest known instrument made by Dubois & Couturier, a firm that flourished in Lyon in the 1830s. The style of the ferrules and stays between the sections of tubing was very modern for the time and became generally accepted only in the 1850s. Because in the early nineteenth century literally all solo literature for cors solo was composed in the keys of G, F, E, and E-flat, the horns were built with exchangeable loops just for those keys. This instrument has been used very little.
