The Liberal army garrison of San Sebastián, under the command of George de Lacy Evans, took advantage of the departure of the bulk of the Carlist army in the Royal Expedition to attack with the intention of liberating the route to the French border in May 1837. The Carlists established their resistance in Irún, fortifying the town hall and establishing their garrison in the "Parque" fort. On the afternoon of May 16, British artillerymen bombed Irún, doing so again in the early hours of the morning of May 17. Infantry attacks continued throughout May 17, causing numerous deaths. The Tonkin Campaign (French: Campagne du Tonkin) was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Can Vuong nationalist uprising in Annam, which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla. The campaign officially ended in April 1886, when the expeditionary corps was reduced in size to a division of occupation, but Tonkin was not effectively pacified until 1896.

The Battle of Uddevalla took place at Uddevalla on August 28, 1677 as part of the Scanian War. After the fall of Marstrand to the Norwegians, Gothenburg had become vulnerably exposed. Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie assembled 3,000 Swedes. The force camped at Vänersborg on August 10, and moved from there to Uddevalla. Hans lowenhielm of the Norwegian Dragoons leads a charge.

Mehmed II (March 30, 1432 - May 3, 1481) or, in modern Turkish, Fatih Sultan Mehmet; known as Mahomet or Mohammed II in early modern Europe) was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1444 to September 1446, and later from February 1451 to 1481. In 1453, at the age of just 21, Mehmed led an Ottoman army in the siege of Constantinople with between 80,000 to 200,000 troops and a navy of 320 vessels, though the bulk of them were transport and store ships. The city was surrounded by sea and land; the fleet at the entrance of the Bosphorus was stretched from shore to shore in the form of a crescent, to intercept or repel any assistance from the sea for the besieged Byzantines. In early April, the Siege of Constantinople began. After several fruitless assaults, the city's walls held off the Turks with great difficulty, even with the use of the new Orban's bombard, a cannon similar to the Dardanelles Gun. The Turkish Patrol Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps French The present picture depicts Turkish military patrols making their rounds at Smyrnanow Izmirwhich Decamps visited in 1828. It is a late variant of his first major Orientalist subject, exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1831 (now in the Wallace Collection, London). Decamps belonged to the first generation of French painters to popularize scenes of everyday life set in the Middle East. This painting belonged to the Metropolitan Museum's first president, John Taylor Johnston, until 1876, when it was purchased by Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, the Museum's first woman benefactor..
