Medieval Helmets

Diverse collection of ornate helmets from the 15th and 16th centuries, highlighting craftsmanship and design for combat and tournaments.

Barbute ca. 1460 Italian, Milan The english term barbut (from the italian, barbuta) denotes a characteristically tall form of visorless helmet with narrow T- or Y-shaped face opening that was worn almost exclusively in Italy in the third quarter of the fifteenth century. This barbut is forged from a single plate of steel, its hemispherical skull rising to a sharp comb at the top and descending at the sides and back almost to the tops of the shoulders; the back of the helmet has an elegant profile that curves inward to follow the nape of the neck, then turns outward to form a short tail. The face opening is T-shaped and is reinfored by an applied band of iron held by decorative rosette rivets. The series of rivets encicling the middle of the bowl formerly secured a strap on the inside, to which was sewn a padded lining; below this, on either side, is a pair of rivets to secure the chin straps, now also lost. This elegantly proportioned and gracefully shaped barbut demonstrates the virtuo

Foot-Combat Helm ca. 1490 possibly British or Flemish For the tournament fought on foot in an enclosed field. Said to have come from Saint Mary's Church at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, where it may have hung over the tomb of its owner.. Foot-Combat Helm. possibly British or Flemish. ca. 1490. Steel, leather, textile, copper alloy. HelmetsClose-Helmet for the Field dated 1594, with later restorations Martin Schmidt Although now marred by corrosion, the etched and gilt decoration on this helmet is of high quality. It is exceptional in that the etcher inscribed his name at the base of the bowl, Martin Schmidt, and added the date, 1594, twice on the bottom rear collar lame. Few etcher's signatures are known, and this dated example by Schmidt, who is otherwise unrecorded, appears to be unique.. Close-Helmet for the Field 26517Close Helmet for the Tourney. The fortress had been captured and destroyed by the Turks in 1470. Now divided largely between the Ethnological Museum, Athens, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chalcis hoard contains many rare and unusual elements of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century armor. Of particular importance are the variety of headpieces and the many fragments of brigandines (armor for the torso constructed of small plates riveted to layers of fabric), some of which retain portions of their original velvet covering. The Chalcis armor provides a unique picture of the armament used in the Aegean, one of the easternmost military outposts of the Venetian empire.. Bascinet 34277Helmet. Culture: German. Numerous cuts on the left side give evidence of its active service in knightly contests. This example retains its original leather lining straps and adjustable shock-absorbing cross-straps arranged as an X inside the bowl. To the ends of these straps were attached thin laces that passed through holes at the back of the bowl and allowed the wearer to adjust the tension on the straps. The leather-covered lining at the chin is preserved. The graceful lines of the bowl and the pairs of lightly engraved lines around the edges of the plates recall helmets made in the imperial workshops at Innsbruck. (The brow reinforce is missing; the long threaded bolt at the front, intended to affix the grandguard, is a later modification.). Close-Helmet for the Tilt 26448Armet. Southern German. North Italy, Brescia (), 16th century. Steel with etched decorative bands and roundels; overall: 29.5 x 28.5 x 23 cm (11 5/8 x 11 1/4 x 9 1/16 in.). Decoration was critical to fine armor, and etching was the most commonly used technique. Here, the bands along the borders are etched. On the breastplate, pauldrons (shoulder guards), and tassets (hip and upper leg guards), etched medallions enclose profile busts reminiscent of ancient Roman portraits. The lance rest on the breastplate indicates that this half-suit was once part of a complete field armor for man and horse. The etching technique used for armor was developed in the late 1400s. The metal surface was first coated with an acid-resistant substance, such as wax or varnish. An etching needle was then used to scratch a design into the surface. The exposed areas were then treated with an acid that would "bite" or etch the lines into the metal. When the coating was removed, the etched design was blackened forIron helmet Iron helmet of the medieval knight. Formerly gilt, the etched decoration on this example includes bands of foliage set against a diagonally hatched background. Similar ornament is found in contemporary Italian prints. The sallet was probably fitted with a large bellows visor pivoting at the sides and was intended for use by a light cavalryman.. Bowl of a Sallet. Italian, probably Milan. ca. 1510-15. Closed burgonets in the fluted style are particularly rare. This finely made example is etched in the manner of Daniel Hopfer (1471-1536) of Augsburg and may have been made by Kolman Helmschmid, the leading armorer of his generation, with whom Hopfer seems to have been associated.. The backplate is in a style known as alla tedesca (in the Germanic fashion), suggesting that it was made for a client north of the Alps. Greek This helmet and the pair of greaves (shin guard), or cnemids, complementing it belong to the key elements of a panoply, the set of offensive and defensive arms that a Greek warrior would have used in combat. The complete panoply would have typically also included a spear, a shield, and a sword. The helmet dates from the late Archaic period (ca. 700-480 B.C.) and is a late example of a type now generally known as Corinthian, which was popular in Greece and in territories colonized by or in regular contact with the Greeks. It is distinctive among the many Corinthian-type specimens known to survive for the elliptical form of the openings for the eyes, and the presence of cut outs for the ears. These features may have been inspired by the design of a contemporaneous type of helmet, which is generally known today as Chalcidian.
