The region was ruled by mirs of the Talpur family from 1783 until 1843, when it was taken over by the British. Very few of these complete Sind armors survive, and this is one of the best examples.. The former was a mock combat fought by groups of mounted contestants armed with lances and rebated swords or clubs; in the latter, two armored contestants fought on foot within a wooden enclosure, the favored weapons usually being polaxes or swords, their strokes carefully monitored by referees. This helm bears faint traces of a mark, an M surmounted by a crescent, which is thought to be that of Guillem Margot (active in Brussels, recorded 1505-20). The same mark appears on three other elements of armor in the Metropolitan Museum: an armet (acc. no. 29.158.52); and elbow defense, or couter (acc. no. 29.158.1h, where it is struck twice); and the front half of a tournament helm (acc. no. 14.25.572).. Matched round shields with open-faced helmets formed essential equipment for noble field commanders; in addition to providing protection, these served as a sign of rank. This heavy shield (target) and helmet (morion) were intended to defend against gunfire and blows from swords and pikes. Remarkably, they retain their original silk linings and fringe, decorative features that also muffled clanging blows. Training in the use of the target was fundamental to those learning the art of self-defense in the period.. Steel, brass, gilding, silk velvet, horse hair, silk, and silver-gilt fringe . Date: late 4th-early 3rd century B.C..Probably inspired by Celtic prototypes, and also quickly adopted by the Romans, Montefortino-type helmets were especially popular in Etruria from the fourth to the second centuries B.C. This example is Etruscan and remarkable for its sturdiness, untouched surface, and distinctive ornamentation. Among well over 400 Montefortino-type helmets that have survived, only one other similarly decorated example is known. Originating from the Necropolis del Frontone, Perugia, it now is in the Museo nazionale de Perguia, Italy (inv. 362 B1286).The helmet has a hemispherical one-piece bowl of cast, hammered, chased, and engraved bronze, which is surmounted by an integral medial knob-shaped finial, and flanged at the rear into a sloped nape guard that slightly flares upward. Some of them are struck with Milanese-style marks, suggesting they may have been made in Italy for export to Spain; alternately, they may have been made in Spain and marked in imitation of the more prestigious and expensive Italian originals.
