Madonna and Child with Nine Angels ca. 1315 Segna di Buonaventura Italian This panel and another in the Lehman Collection portraying the Crucifixion (1975.1.2) formed a diptych (two panels hinged together so they could open and close) and would have been used for private devotion. The radiant beauty of the Virgins court, enhanced by the ornamental detail, contrasts with the tragic drama of the Crucifixion, thus offering the worshipper two very different images on which to meditate. These panels reveal Segna di Buonaventuras appropriation of the language and motifs of his master, Duccio. The greatest Sienese painter of the fourteenth century, Duccios emotionally expressive figures, complex spatial structures, and subtle use of color had a formative influence on generations of artists. The Madonna and Child enthroned is sometimes thought to reflect Duccio's lost altarpiece of 1302 for the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena, while parts of the "Crucifixion" echo the center panel of a portable t

Mary Magdalene (Greek ada) was one of Jesus' most celebrated disciples, and the most important woman disciple in the movement of Jesus. Jesus cleansed her of 'seven demons', [Luke 8: 2 [Mark 16: 9 conventionally interpreted as referring to complex illnesses. She became most prominent during his last days, being present at the cross after the male disciples (excepting John the Beloved) had fled, and at his burial. She was the first person to see Jesus after his Resurrection, according to both John 20 and Mark 16: 9. Mary Magdalene is considered by the Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches to be a saint, with a feast day of July 22. The Eastern Orthodox churches also commemorate her on the Sunday of the Myrrhbearers.
