Hercules guards, Anonymous, c. 1485 - c. 1505 In a round temple stands on a tiled floor, in the middle of a column with a knight assisted by two squires. On the skirt, the inscription: Hercules is on the skirt. Hercules supports his arm on the head of one of the squire. He has lifted the other arm. Hercules and the Wapenmeester wear a flat bonnet of red with stored edge. The back wall has again stranted windows and hooks hang a weapon skirt and a helmet on the left. The blue dome roof has a Lucarne with two sidelines with pinnacles, a canopy forming for the image of the gods, which has been presented as a sitting, gesture man in long red-boker overview. On the left and right the flattened bow is supported by columns with red and blue painted notch cutting, which are again supported by marbled columns of red and blue stripes, on whose leaf capitals kneeled raw figures of red and ocher yellow. This illuminated frontispiece features Pope Pius II, who reigned from 1458 to 1464, above a view of his hometown of Siena and eight Sienese coats of arms. Pius II had an unusual past for a pope, having served as the imperial poet laureate in 1442 at Frederick IIIís court. While poet laureate, he wrote what would become a best seller of its time, The Tale of the Two Lovers, a courtly romance. Episode from the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres (230 ft) long, which depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings, in 1066.
