Leaves from a Book of Hours, c. 1470-1480. Guillaume Vrelant (Flemish, c. 1454-1481). Tempera, liquid gold, and grisaille on vellum; sheet: 10.2 x 7.5 cm (4 x 2 15/16 in.). Guillaume Vrelant, born in Utrecht, was known to be in Bruges from 1454 onward where he died around 1481. He probably went there to sidestep a 1427 law which banned the sale of Utrecht images. A painter very much in vogue, he founded the Illuminators Guild in Bruges under the patronage of Saint John the Evangelist. He is known to have provided manuscripts to the Burgundian court.

Panel with Christ and the Woman of Samarra early 16th century French Until 1950 this panel lined the Great Hall of Highcliffe Castle in southern England. Constructed in the 1830s for Lord Stuart de Rothesay, the castle was furnished in part with stonework acquired form the ruined royal abbey at Jumièges in Normandy, where the panels might also have originated. In all likelihood they once decorated the backs of choir stalls ordered in 1501 by the abbot of Jumièges. Carved on The Cloisters' thirty-five oak panels (50.147.1-38) are scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ, each set under an elaborate canopy of single or double arches. The exuberant latticework surrounding the arches provides an almost encyclopedic display of pinnacles, crockets, spirals and other fanciful decorations. As in many late medieval works, the figures are foreshortened within their inhabited surroundings, adding depth and drama to the composition.. Panel with Christ and the Woman of Samarra 471377

Roundel with Saints Barbara and Catherine. Culture: German. Dimensions: 6 1/4 × 1/16 in. (15.9 × 0.2 cm). Date: ca. 1500-1510.The artist who painted this roundel, probably from Swabia in southwestern Germany, had a sure command of multiple techniques including point of brush, stylus and stick work, badger brushing and other reductive means of texturing unfired mattes as well as of silver stain. Another roundel of exactly the same size and subject is now in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich. When one scale image is overlaid with the other the outlines correspond precisely indicating that both were executed from the same design. The only difference was that the individual painters aligned the like-sized blank roundel over the same or duplicate drawing in slightly different positions. In this case the haloes of both saints were slightly trimmed, whereas in the Munich example, the halos are intact but the lower folds of their robes are abridged. Saint Veronica ca. 1525 Possibly after a design by Bernard van Orley Netherlandish Small-scale devotional tapestries like this one were popular among the most elite collections of Europe. One buying trip for twelve such textiles cost Queen Isabella of Castile the equivalent to ten years of the salary she paid the ships master on Christopher Columbuss transatlantic voyage in 1492. A tapestry comparable in size and subject to this one belonged to Isabellas granddaughter, the Habsburg Queen Catherine of Portugal. The sixteenth-century appeal of this tapestry lay in the skill of its weavers—who rendered the folds of Veronicas mantle in silver thread, tackling the challenging effect of watery reflections—and in its compelling design.
