Leaf from a Gradual: Historiated Initial Salve Sancta Parens with Birth of the Virgin (recto) and Music (verso), c. 1420-1450. Northern Italy, 15th century. Ink, tempera, and gold on vellum; each leaf: 52.1 x 34.9 cm (20 1/2 x 13 3/4 in.). This beautiful leaf is dominated by a large historiated S from which sprays of foliage inhabited by a putto, a rabbit, and a stork extend into the left margin. A scene representing the birth of the Virgin is within the double curve of the S. Saint Anne, the Virgin’s mother, occupies the birthing bed in the upper scene. Below, the infant Mary has been bathed and wrapped in swaddling clothes. In manuscript missals and their musical counterparts, the gradual, votive Masses are generally assigned one to each day of the week with Saturday reserved for the Blessed Virgin. The votive Mass to the Virgin varied from season to season. Three Masses were, therefore, supplied—one for advent, one to be used from Christmas to purification, and a third, represent

Four Gospels in Armenian. Culture: Armenian. Dimensions: Overall: 11 1/16 x 7 5/8 x 3 3/8 in. (28.1 x 19.4 x 8.5 cm). Date: 1434/35.Illuminated manuscripts are among the finest works of Armenian art as the "Word" has been the primary focus of veneration in the Armenian Church since its founding in the early fourth century. In the fifteenth century under Mongol domination in the region of Khizan near Lake Van (now in Turkey), Armenian artists developed the dramatic narrative style of illumination seen here. Colophons, notations in the text, identify this gospel as written by the scribe Margar for the Monastery of St. George at Mokk' at the order of Bishop Sion. As it typical for Armenian gospels, the illuminations of the life of Christ are grouped at the beginning of the text before the Canon Tables with an evangelist's portrait introducing each gospel. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Bifolium with Christ in Majesty in an Initial A, from an Antiphonary ca. 1405 Bohemian With rich color and gold, this leaf from a choir book joins majesty and mystery with a sense of playfulness. The letter A becomes a throne for Christ, robed in silks, as he sits before a cloth of gold held by barely perceptible crimson angels. Meanwhile, in the margins, a gentle black bear perches on a vine; nearby is a lizard and a hunter aiming his arrow at a crane. This was the first page of a richly decorated book of hymns. The text set to music here was sung on the first Sunday of Advent, the season preceding Christmas. The kneeling abbot was added later, obscuring the image of the original, unknown donor underneath.. The Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated manuscript gospel book produced around the year 700 CE in a monastery on Lindisfarne Island, off the coast of Northumberland. It is now on display in the British Library in London. The manuscript is one of the finest works in the unique style of Hiberno-Saxon or Insular art, combining Mediterranean, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic elements. The Lindisfarne Gospels are presumed to be the work of a monk named Eadfrith, who became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 698 and died in 721. Current scholarship indicates a date around 715, and it is believed they were produced in honour of St. Cuthbert. However, it is also possible that Eadfrith produced them prior to 698, in order to commemorate the elevation of Cuthbert's relics in that year, which is also thought to have been the occasion for which the St Cuthbert Gospel was produced. The Gospels are richly illustrated in the insular style, and were originally encased in a fine leather binding covered with jewels and m
